Beaverhead county registered 100 births in the year, 32 more than 1935 and 12 more than 1934. June had the most births with 15, while September had only two. Females outnumbered males 64 to 46. Total deaths were 65, down from 71. several caused by accidents or violence, with detailed ages and causes listed for many individuals.
Snow blanketed Beaverhead County with six to eight inches of fresh powder turning roads slick and slowing travel. No serious injuries were reported from recent accidents though farmers shovel extra hay while ranchers endure the cold. The Dillon Country Club cancels New Year golf as winter sports pause and Agnes Pierce’s juniper lights draw praise amid numerous holiday displays. Thermometers record a low of 23 degrees below zero, with Sunday night at 12 below and Tuesday afternoon 4 above before a warming reading later in the day.
Two new county officers will assume duties at the courthouse on Monday January 4 as the fiscal year opens. Judge H G Rodgers will replace Lyman H Bennett in the Fifth Judicial district, Paul H Temple will become Sheriff succeeding James A McCollum for two years. Miss Bertie Mathews will not take office until March 1. George H Montgomery will replace Senator George M Melton in the state legislature and others re elected begin new terms next Monday.
Dan Macey, suspected of issuing worthless checks, was arrested Wednesday afternoon by Charles Nelson, police chief, and is held at the county jail.
Claims against the county must be filed with the clerk and recorder not later than 5 o'clock this afternoon for payment at the January session of the county board.
Montana Taxpayers Association figures showed Dillon with 35 746 net indebtedness and 45 000 in water bonds offset by 9 254 in cash and 1 900 from beer licenses. Water Commissioner Forrest Bayerd says only water bonds exist 5 000 retired July 1 1936 leaving 40 000 in bonds with 5 000 to be retired annually. Cash on July 1 totaled 10 245 45 suggesting subtraction from bonded debt in the taxpayer report.
With T E Gilbert as chairman the Dillon Rotary club heard Scott Simpson CCC camp adviser discuss the education program at Birch Creek CCC camp. He noted literacy aims and correspondence courses, strong vocational interest, radio project work, voluntary religious services, and local vocational placement, praising the Beaverhead community. Visitor B E Cummings of Billings attended.
Ed Baker, longtime Beaverhead county resident and former sheep shearer and ranch hand, died Wednesday night at the county farm after a lingering illness. He was 78. No relatives located. Funeral held Thursday at Brundage chapel with Rev. J A Meeke of the Methodist church officiating, interment in Mountain View cemetery.
Drs Clair and Jay B Cosgrove, longtime Dillon residents and Beaverhead county high school graduates, announce a 23 room Cosgrove clinic in Los Angeles. The building, constructed by E E Phillips, costs about 20000 dollars and will open to the public January 10. Local Beaverhead residents invited to attend.
Andrew Snell a popular colored porter was attacked on North Washington street last Saturday night, severely beaten and robbed of $20. He suffered five broken ribs and was treated at Barrett hospital. attackers remained unidentified.
Ellen Marie Meede six months old daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Meede of this city died at the family home Wednesday morning after a brief illness. Besides her parents she is survived by two brothers and a sister. Funeral from Brundage chapel Thursday at 2 pm with Rev W J Loar of the Baptist church officiating. Miss Marie Knox of Dell was shopping in Dillon Wednesday.
The county treasurer Norah Connelley says applications may be made at the office this month but plates won’t be delivered until after the new year. Over 50 applications have already been filed.
The Dillon fire department will host the annual New Year's Eve dance at the city hall auditorium with music by Frisco's Dance Band. Free favors will be distributed during the evening. Mrs Clarus Birrer and Mrs Henry Birrer and daughter Dorothy of Dell were Dillon shoppers Tuesday. Maud Mia Ted Marchesseau or Polaris were Dillon visitors Tuesday.
More than 75 youngsters attended a Dillon Lodge No. 16 Masonic Christmas party at the Masonic hall with stunts by local pupils, dances, a fish pond, and gifts including tickets to the Hartwig theatre. County jail inmates shared a holiday meal and church services delivered Yuletide spirit across town amid record holiday trade. In the year just ending, 118 marriage licenses were issued, led by Idaho and Beaverhead residents, with ages ranging 16 to 66 and partners from multiple towns.
The Bond Local Farmers Union met at the Nelson school on Wednesday December 23. Officers elected for the coming year include Holgar Carlson as president Carl Giudici as vice president Joe Lackner as secretary treasurer George Heik kiln as door keeper and John Albers as conductor. Executive board members are John Albers Carl Meine and Lee Schuler. A report on the year's activity and finances and a talk on highway weed control preceded the election.
The Northside Country Club held its annual party on Wednesday evening at the Andrus Hotel. After a delicious dinner, guests enjoyed cards as the main diversion of the evening.
