The county treasurer Miss Bertie Mathews reports firsthalf tax collections totaling 211 493 79 compared with 230 943 31 last year. Delinquency shifts include a real estate rise of 2 821 58 and a personal property drop of 916 62 yielding a net delinquency increase of 1 404 96.
Delbert Longtin known as Curly died last Wednesday after an operation in Anaconda. A longtime Dillon resident, he worked in the Dart Hardware plumbing shop and later operated his own shop in the Smelter city. He was president of the Anaconda Rotary Club and a past master of Acacia Lodge A F and A M. Survived by his widow and two daughters. Funeral held at the Masonic temple with Rev. Evert Top officiating. Dillon friends attended.
Dr. Lee Williams son of Mrs. A L Anderson has attracted attention in California medical circles. A Pasadena Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons Luncheon club clipping notes his recent address on Anaesthesia. He traced ether history and explained types and selection criteria for different cases.
Final tally shows county pledges and donations totaling 4530.46, surpassing the 3500 goal by 1000.46. About 2100 funds will aid east Montana families, 250 to the American Red Cross, 250 to Beaverhead chapter, and 1930.46 for local relief work. committee urges prompt payment of pledges.
Johnny Donegan of Twin Bridges was brought to the city Sunday afternoon with his left arm nearly severed by a shotgun explosion while hunting rabbits. The arm was amputated below the elbow at Barrett hospital. He is the son of Mrs. Inez Donegan of Jackson.
A group of sheepmen met at the county courthouse to establish the Southwestern Montana Wool growers association. Roscoe Cornell of Dillon was named president, Andy Williams of Alder vice president, and Howard Morse of this city secretary and treasurer. An appointed membership committee will solicit more sheepmen to join.
The first passenger train from the south on the Utah & Northern line reached Butte on December 21 1881 at 1130 PM. A large crowd gathered at the station to witness the arrival, with ex postmaster George W Irvin among the first to disembark. The article recalls the line’s early progress from Dillon, its cars and sleepers Rambler Advance and Security, and the heavy freight business linked to five forwarding houses in Butte.
Mrs. M. D. Thibadeau mother of W W Thibadeau of Dillon died about 9 p m Monday in Coeur d Alene Idaho after a brief illness. She was a Bannack pioneer and recalled the 1862 frontier days with Captain Fiske's wagon train. Her son and daughters survive with grandchildren. Funeral services were held in Coeur d Alene and burial is planned in Mountain View cemetery near Dillon.
The Dillon Choral Club directed by Mrs W G Gilbert gave residents a musical treat last evening singing a group of Christmas carols at the community tree on the depot lawn. The concert was enjoyed by all present.
Tom Davis, a prominent Butte Rotarian, addressed the Dillon Rotary Club on international disarmament. He argued current armament costs exceed prewar levels and urged reductions, noting huge military forces burden taxpayers while the Peace Conference influence grows. President Bergeson chaired. Basith Edwards led an entertainment program. wives and several guests attended.
The Dillon Parent Teacher Association hosted a large father and son event at the high school gymnasium drawing over two hundred participants. Dr. R. D. Curry chaired the program with a song led by Dr. W. H. Stephan, followed by two reels of motion pictures including Louis Schmittroth and Roy Forrester’s Salmon River trip and a Salmon country hunting trip. A three round boxing match between Joe Roland and Ty Onng Atkeson and a four‑pound bout between Andy Gilbert and Ken Downin also featured.
Pilot Red Morrison landed at a government airport with Miss Edith Saxton and her brother. Saxton, suffering neuritis, was taken to St. Peter's hospital in Helena after the craft arrived from the capital city. Snow on the field blocked takeoff and cars tried to break the runway but failed. It was Miss Saxton’s first flight.
Coach Breeden's Bulldogs, 22 players strong, opened the season with a 46 to 30 loss to Montana Hardware of Butte and bounced back to beat Lima 37 to 25. Callahan Depew and Ed Swanson led the defense and Bates topped scoring with 11 points as Breeden used much of the squad.
Mrs. R. W. Boone learned Sunday of the death of her sister Mrs Grace Hines in San Francisco after an operation. Born and raised in Dillon she was well known here. Survived by two daughters Mrs E S Sampson of Santa Rosa Calif and Mrs L C Monroe of Seattle. Also two brothers A S Johnson and Oscar Johnson.
In a non election year the board of county commissioners merged Barrett Precinct 10 into Dillon Precinct 14 West and Coolidge Precinct 22 into Wise River Precinct 28, reducing total to 22 precincts. County Surveyor Metlen tasked to redraw county precinct and road district maps reflecting the changes.
Leonard Eliel, a prominent pioneer merchant, is buried at Mountain View Cemetery after a funeral at St. James Episcopal church. Rev H N Tragitt officiated, J E Monroe gave a eulogy, pallbearers included Francis Tonney and others, with many stores and offices closing for the service and floral tributes arriving from distant places.
Dr A C Morrow of the Montana Livestock sanitary board spoke to the Butte Exchange club on Tuesday outlining the dairy industry's various phases.
