Esteemed Dillon couple observe golden wedding

Mr and Mrs John S Baker celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in Beaverhead with nearly all children and many grandchildren present. A bouquet and gold piece from 380 local business people were among the gifts, with messages from Judge Lew L Callaway. Baker served Beaverhead County as clerk and recorder for 28 years, the eldest active county official in the state, while Mrs Baker supported him in their long partnership. Their children span across Oregon Idaho and Montana with several grandchildren joining the celebration.

Stores to Remain Open Evenings for Christmas Trade

Dillon businessmen announce weekday evening hours starting December 15 to help holiday shoppers finish early. Stores promise unusually fine and complete stocks and expect lively trade as day shoppers join the evening crowds.

Beaverhead County Exceeds Red Cross Quota by 50 Percent

Beaverhead county surpassed its $400 Red Cross quota by over 50 percent in the November drive. Final figures show 608 individual subscriptions bringing in $662.20, with $262.20 oversubscribed against the target. Chairman Lambert Eliel praised the countywide effort.

County Tax Totals Show November Collections Reach 222000

Miss Noyah Connelley county treasurer reports November tax totals for the first half of 1930 at 222,195.16 dollars. Full payments totaled 88,180.69 dollars and half payments 134,014.47 dollars while delinquent taxes stood at 16,279.40 dollars. Last year’s mid year collection reached 287,415.79 with 95,059.85 from full payments and 183,660.93 from half payments.

Service Club Opens Season With Banquet Talk

The Commercial Service association of the city held its first winter meeting at the Metlen hotel after a banquet with 28 members and visitors. F J Habein from Butte gave credit profit and loss guidance with practical suggestions. Dixie Lawton and A M Riley also spoke. A new board of control was elected including Lambert Eliel Chester Hale C E Blinn Anson Baxter and Dr W J Romersa.

Coal theft case yields twenty dollar fine

A man identified as John Doe was brought by Undersheriff Carl Hartwig from Armstead on a coal theft complaint. He pled guilty in the justice court and paid a $20 fine for stealing coal from Gilmore & Pittsburg railroad yards.

Fox farming topic at Dillon Rotary meeting

The Dillon Rotary heard a presentation on the silver black fox industry started near Dillon in 1928. C. E. Blinn described local farms and farming methods while noting about 350 pelts to be sold at New York auction January 6 and a 200 percent local increase.

Mining Men to Meet Saturday in Beaverhead

Beaverhead Mining association holds its regular monthly meeting this Saturday at 7 PM in the Sugar Bowl cafe headquarters. Secretary Roy Herndon will preside. Topics include state takeover of federal lands and its impact on mining, plus a proposed custom mill for Beaverhead County and other mining interests.

Dillon Native Victor Stolle Dies in Seattle at 46

Victor Stolle, longtime Dillon resident and former local high school basketball member, died of a heart ailment in Seattle on December 4. Born in Glendale 46 years ago, he trained as a pharmacist in Dillon and Boise, later owning a large Seattle drug store and managing others in Washington and Idaho. He leaves a widow, two daughters, a sister and two brothers.

Talented Violinist Frances Robinson Presents Recital

Miss Frances Robinson, violin instructor at Montana State Normal, gave a Dillon recital to a large audience. The program included Mozart A Major Adagio Allegro and other works with Miss Mira Booth as pianist. The Sioux Flute Serenade by Kilton Czerwonky connects to a Winnebago melody from Haskell Institute.

Mrs Abbie Gowen and her son Cameron entertained last Sunday with a well appointed dinner at their home on South Atlantic street. Covers were laid for sixteen.

Christmas Tree Lights Up Dillon Depot Lawn

Downtown displays glow with large symmetric evergreens attached to lamp posts. Local stores and houses funded the decorations while the Dillon Rotary club sponsors a depot lawn tree lit by colored lamps. J C Whitham to secure the tree, wiring by Union Electric, and a Christmas night program with carols planned.

Hazelbaker Scores English Dole Plan

Washington dispatch reports Montana Lieutenant Governor A. Hazelbaker faulting the British dole system as unsatisfactory. He said English workers preferred jobs to government relief after touring Europe as a guest of a life insurance firm. He has just returned to New York and will return home soon.

Coach O. K. Moe says the second basketball game of the season will be Saturday night at the Normal college gym with Montana Hardware of Butte as the visitors. A volleyball final between junior and senior girls precedes the game, starting at 7 15 with the basketball game at 8.

Dog Kills Sheep at Lovell Livestock Ranch

A female police dog at Lovell Livestock ranch escaped its leash and ran through a pen of 29 lambs, slaying three outright and crippling five others. The dog then returned to its kennel, with the owners tracing the slaughter to the animal after the incident. Twenty more lambs were injured.
