District Court Opens January Short Term With Robbery Cases

The coming term of the district court will be a short one with twelve cases set for trial, including two robberies. Jurors have been summoned and the term starts January 4, with the last case January 24. Civil cases fill ten of the calendar items, including several name defendants and mining firms.

Burglars Take Cash From Local Lumber Office

Thieves broke into the Heaverhead Lumber Co. on South Montana Street last Thursday evening and opened the safe taking just over 34 dollars. No other items were disturbed. Entrance was via a side door. The same night a rifle, a shotgun and an automobile robe vanished from H. M. Brundage’s garage on Atlantic Street. Next morning the shotgun and robe were found in a car in the adjacent garage. No clues were left for either theft. In Honolulu, two coconut fiber caskets resembling Egyptian mummy cases hold the bones of King Liloa and his great grandson Lenoi kama, dating to A D 1500.

Bishop Finnegan to Visit Dillon for Confirmation

Bishop George J. Finnegan of the Helena diocese will visit Dillon on Sunday December 11 to confirm about 100 St. Rose’s parishioners. He will celebrate 8 o’clock mass and distribute holy communion, with high mass at 10:30 by Rev. Walther Clifford. A public reception at St. Rose’s rectory follows 2 to 5.

George Hughes Tops County Beef Steer Market

George Hughes sold a carload of steers from Horse Prairie averaging 1 160 pounds at $127 50 per head or $9 90 per hundred. Shipped from Armstead the cattle were called the finest bunch this season. About 12 000 head have been shipped from the county this fall and winter, netting growers around a million dollars as prices rise. Local commission men led by W S Tash and others handled most shipments to Los Angeles Portland Tacoma and coast markets. Nay Brothers posted the second best sale of the season. Arrest of Carl Harness After Beating Board Bill

Sheriff W C Orr arrested Carl Harness Monday evening as he alighted from the Butte bus and held for Undersheriff Oldhabert of Anaconda who came down Wednesday to take him back. Harness is charged with beating his board bill at an Anaconda hotel and also making away with a gold watch.

Big Auction Sale of Livestock Soon

An auction sale to ranchers across the region will be held the afternoon of December 17 at the George Ditty ranch four miles south of town. 250 Hereford cattle 125 Shorthorn cattle 125 hogs and 15 horses will be offered in excellent condition with cattle sold in bunches to buyers. Clyde Moore is auctioneer and A G Williams serves as clerk. Sale starts promptly at 1 o'clock.

Frigid Beaverhead Valley Sees Record Low Temps

Beaverhead residents awoke to deep snow and a biting cold snap with temperatures plunging to 16 to 20 below in several areas. Cars froze overnight as two-day cold wave continued, four days earlier than last year, recalling Montana records set in December 1926 with barometer drops and subzero readings.

Attendance Dell Won by Rotary Club

Dillon Rotary club members praised a record attendance for November at the Andrus hotel meeting. The club earned the bronze and gold chairman's award and a bell presented by Frank Hazelbaker, with a 95 percent attendance increase. Prof. Robert Clark and Rev. F. X. Leschner spoke, and Ralph McFadden played piano. Dr. William Root commented on thinking speed versus writing.

Two Local Men Witnesses in Butte Gambling Trials

The Rev. Irrnest E. B. Loft formerly of the local church and now at Cleveland Oklahoma is in Butte as a witness in gambling prosecutions. G. V. Welder a Dillon surveyor also testifies aiding Loft. Joseph ONeill was found guilty and fined $500 after a trial marked by sharp remarks from both sides.

Big Hole residents return from Chicago livestock expo

Mr and Mrs George Clemow came back Tuesday from the International Livestock exposition in Chicago as the only Beaverhead county residents noted. Clemow bought four purebred Hereford bulls to ship to his Big Hole ranch. Montana’s delegation of 185 performed well with first prizes in grain and record livestock success. A B Cook Townsend won world championship on a Hereford steer and Gardiner Anaconda earned top sheep honors. C Edison Smith Corvallis won the world winter wheat title and retained the Durum cup for a third straight year.

Divorces Granted in Two District Court Actions

Judge Edgar J. Baker presided Tuesday in Emily Meine versus Charles Meine and granted the plaintiff a divorce. A decree filed Wednesday grants Luella Lane a divorce from Hiles P. Lane by Judge Lyman H. Bennet.

Melvyn Home Robbed Before Evening Curfew

Thieves entered Mrs. Martha Melvyn's west side home between six and nine Monday evening and ransacked several rooms. They took a small amount of cash and left valuables untouched, indicating a careful survey of the premises.

Commissioners Plan Connection Of County And State Roads

Beaverhead county commissioners ordered county engineer George Metlen to secure rights of way and complete connecting the county and state highways. Work to start soon with about 600 feet on the north end and four miles on the south end. A December 5, 1927 meeting approved road and bridge plans and authorized inspections. bids for county physician were opened at $890.00.
