Road Project Approved by State Board

The Dillon Chamber of Commerce announced that the Montana Highway Commission has approved the Dillon to Twin Bridges road. Work will start within 60 days with October as the targeted timeline, linking Highway 10 at Whitehall to Highway 91 at Dillon. The delegation led by H. M. Warner, O. A. Berge son, and J. L. Mayland met Helena officials to secure support.

Edwin Buck addresses Dillon Rotary on Montana Power history

Edwin Buck, Montana Power Company manager, spoke at the Dillon Rotary Club on history and resume of the Montana Power Company. He highlighted the Polson dam completed in 1937, low Montana electrical rates, and line renovation in Dillon. Buck distributed two volumes of Her Majesty Montana and noted his softball touring, inviting local interest.

Beaverhead County High School plans a September 5 start in the basement of the Normal College with no pre-registration. Principal Conrad Orr notes the 1939 40 year aims include a new building due by November or December and a strong faculty featuring three new instructors: James O Connor Fromberg English public speaking and drama. Renfro Leads West Yellowstone Trapshoot Tie

E. W. Ted Renfro led a three way tie in the singles at West Yellowstone trapshoot with Bill Gleed and Pete Westergard. He also won first in the 100 yard handicap, breaking 98 as Otto Schulz of Sheridan followed with 94 in the handicap. The event drew 70 entrants from Montana Idaho and Wyoming.

Elks Drum Corps Cops Fourth Place at Livingston

The Dillon Elks drum and bugle corps finished fourth in the state Elks convention competition held at Livingston last week. Butte’s large corps won top honors. Anaconda was second, Great Falls third, Dillon fourth, Billings fifth, and Glendive sixth.

Dillon Man Near Death After Despondent Action

Warren W. Sheppard, 56, prominent Dillon businessman, is in critical condition at Barrett hospital after a self inflicted gunshot wound in his home office. Officers label the incident a death by own action while noting despondency over family matters. He has resided in Beaverhead county for 32 years.

Second Yearly Hereford Bull Sale Set for October 30

Beaverhead county stockmen plan the second annual Hereford bull sale for Monday October 30 with about 60 bulls and 15 cows expected. Fred Peppert, renowned Hereford auctioneer, will run the sale in Dillon after strong interest from Montana breeders. Woodside Transports Ill Man to Dillon

Fred Woodside a veteran Dillon pilot flew a mercy mission last Thursday to return J F Wikidal a well known retired businessman from Ennis to his Dillon home. Wikidal fell ill at his summer camp on Wade Lake and needed swift transport. The trip began by car to Ennis and Woodside completed the journey by air to avoid aggravating his condition.

Lightning injures Polaris woman in electrical storm

Ida Pahnish of upper Grasshopper was knocked to the floor and briefly unconscious when lightning struck the Pahnish home during Sunday’s storm. A burn appeared on her left leg as shingles tore from the roof and a wire bell cord sparked near the window. Floyd Pahnish, nearby in the yard, was knocked down but suffered no injuries.

Drunken Driving Fine Arrests Prompt Police Roundup

George Proctor pleaded guilty in Judge Louis Stahl's court to driving under the influence and was fined $100 and jailed when unable to pay. Montana highway patrol sheriff's officers and city police led the arrest Friday. Summonses were issued for Pete Kranaty, Roy E. McCord, and Or in Pilon for related traffic offenses.

Dillon Woman Hurt in Car Accident

Miss Marguerite Caldwell daughter of Mrs Hanah Caldwell of this city was injured Wednesday when her car struck loose gravel on Moose Creek hill and plunged fifty feet down the embankment. Passing motorists aided her extraction and she was taken to Barrett hospital with bruises and scratches.

Pioneer Dillon Resident Kate Holcomb Dies at 90

Mrs. Kate Holcomb, a Dillon pioneer who arrived with the Utah and Northern railroad in 1880, died at her Holcomb block home after a yearlong ill health. Born March 5, 1849 in Prussia, she and husband Watson Holcomb helped found Dillon and built the Holcomb House remaining a prominent figure in Beaverhead County.

Entomologists Predict Light Hopper Threat in Beaverhead County

Bozeman entomologists Albert Micheli e and Ray Pratt spent a week in Beaverhead County with county agent Bernard Williams inspecting farms and ranges. They report no Mormon crickets on cropland and say grasshopper and cricket infestations are native to range areas but overall outlook for 1940 is promising. More precise estimates will be available after further checks are completed.
