Normal college reports high placement for 1937 graduates

The 1937 class of 156 graduates shows strong job placement with 138 in teaching positions and 14 in college roles. A few exceptions include two with unknown outcomes and one who preferred salary work. The 1938 prospects look similarly favorable as details unfold. Political Pat Simmers as Meetings Set Democrats Will Gather on Thursday

Beaverhead county Democrats and Republicans plan county meetings this week to select officers and discuss campaign plans. Democratic chair C. E. Blinn calls for Thursday night August 18 in the courthouse. Republican Sam Ditty sets Friday night August 19. Precinct committeemen are urged to attend. Blinn is hospitalized after a recent car accident near Butte.

Joe Mulkey, veteran salesman for Montana Auto Supply, led a June to July sales campaign with the highest percentage on new and used car sales in the Great Falls area, earning a free trip as top performer.

Prairies Bloom With Buffalo Bunch Grass Return

Mrs. Tom Dubois reports buffalo bunch grass returning to Montana foothills after abundant spring rains. The sample from near the large D on the Dubois ranch, tied to early open range cattle and Pacific sheep, measures 28 inches and signals a revival of the historic forage. Spears of the grass are shown in the Dillon Tribune window this week.

City Man Wins Rock Weight Guessing Contest

John Hickey of the city won the guessing contest held at the State Mining association convention displayed rock in front of city hall. Hickey guessed 3800 pounds and his figure matched the stone’s exact weight when weighings were completed by William Logan, convention chairman.

Regular Meet Of Rotarians Is Held Here

John Collins president of the Beaverhead Mining association spoke at the Dillon Rotary club meeting. He reviewed the Montana Mining association meeting in Dillon and outlined mining problems including federal loan difficulties and ore freight rates. Collins traced Southwest Montana gold mining history and noted Grasshopper and Alder gulch gold values at over 300 million dollars at old prices. Harold Snow to chair next week’s meeting.

Death of Mrs. Levi Shambow in Florida at 93

Mrs. Levi Shambow died July 28 at age 93 in St. Cloud Florida at the home of her son and daughter in law George H. Shambow. A native of Illinois she married in 1866 and the couple moved through Omaha to the Northwest: Oregon Washington Montana and finally Centennial valley where they settled in 1887. Five children survive. The obituary notes their long frontier travels from 1866 onward.

Not Guilty Plea in Wise River Shooting Bond Granted

William J. M Heaston Sr. who pleaded not guilty in district court in August to fatally shooting Joseph W. Potts at Wise River on July 24 was released today by Sheriff Paul Temple after his $10,000 bond was approved and signed.

New Training School Head Arrives Here

Mr and Mrs Paul L Anderson arrived in the city from St Louis Park Minnesota. Anderson has been appointed superintendent of the Dillon training school succeeding Charles Henry who resigned. They will reside at 636 South Atlantic street after returning from visits to Laurel and Boyd Montana. Miss Ruth Cathryn Cook has joined the staff after teaching in Escanaba Michigan. She holds a BS and MA from the University of Minnesota and brings extensive remedial teaching experience with unusual pupils.

Potatoes Draw National Growers to Dillon Visit

California and Alabama delegations head to Dillon Montana August 25 to inspect Irvine and Cot tom seed potato farm covering 300 acres of certified varieties including White Rose and Netted Gem. Pastor Wells to Lead First Presbyterian in Dillon

The Rev. P. E. Wells and his wife and daughter arrived in Dillon from Oriskany New York. He has been pastor there for several years and will assume duties as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church on September 1.

Missing Twin Bridges banker W C Jennings sought by search

W C Jennings cashier of the First National bank of Twin Bridges has been missing since Sunday evening. Friends and officers conducted a wide search with Sheriff Paul Temple assisting. He was last known in Dillon where he cashed two checks and was driving a 1934 Chrysler with license 25 798. Theories include kidnapping or amnesia as possible explanations.

City installs new sidewalks after repairs by local crews

Carl Mast and his crew have spent the past month replacing damaged concrete sidewalks citywide. Old walks were torn out and new ones laid by Vaughn and Ragsdale store, Dillon Implement company, Dillon training school, Cash Market, Safeway store, and other local businesses.
