Beaverhead county pioneers in Butte for the Manana Pioneer society annual meeting include James Kirkpatrick and Phil McGovern while John T. Orr and Mrs. L. F. Molleur attend the Sons and Daughters session. Kirkpatrick was introduced as an eyewitness to Plummer's Bannack hanging and will recount it when his wife is present.
Local officers Tuesday evening arrested a man sought by Madison authorities. Deputy Gould of Twin Bridges arrived soon after and took him into custody. He is alleged to be involved in passing worthless checks.
Within hours after driving off with a Hupmobile sedan owned by Walter Hendricks Saturday afternoon, Hall Williams was arrested north of Pie by county authorities and jailed. He faces a five year term.
After eighteen years of active service Rom Foster retires from Foster & Melton and will devote time to sheep and Idaho farm interests. George Melton will conduct the commission business under The Montana Livestock Commission Company name. The firm has handled many sheep and much wool and leaves a wide circle of friends in the northwest. Bob and George wish each other success in their separate lines.
After much needed rains in Beaverhead National Forest officials removed entry restrictions and abolished the permit system. Earlier, dry conditions had required fire precautions and limited visits to timbered areas. Firefighters in the Beaverhead area were released. campers and picnickers are urged to continue fire safety.
A total of 160 days in durance vile were imposed this week for vagrancy and related offences. W. J. Connoly received 30 days, Dave Gray the maximum 90 days, and Ed Jenson 15 days after appearing before Judge Phillips. Ted Hanson pleaded guilty to creating a disturbance at Dillmont park and faces 25 days in jail with a $50 fine.
The Missoula sugar demonstration held near the First National Bank builds interest among Dillon housewives. From 2 to 4 pm daily Mrs. Clark directs classes on canning methods and using Montana sugar in jellies jams and cakes. Demonstrations appear beneficial and well received.
Several new instructors join the Normal College for the 1931 1932 academic year. Elizabeth Shotwell returns as assistant professor of primary education. O Eldora Ragon resumes after world travel. Mrs Helen D Luebben to teach French part time. Forrest LeRoy Foor to teach social page. Grace McCoy Redburn to lead music. Stella K Glasser to head art. Marie Larson to teach typing and shorthand and reside in halls. The term ends with commencement by J Ford McBain.
Normal college hosts a summer textbook sale with 600 volumes priced at ten cents each. Bradley Polytechnic Institute’s Mr. Ellis Fry visits. Dr. Alfred Hall-Quest lectures at assembly. upcoming commencement includes music, speeches, diplomas, and a candlelight procession. A dance, plays, and a small program close the week.
Deputy State Game Warden Charles Price cited three Butte fishermen for fishing in waters closed by the game department. Pled guilty before Judges Opp and Phillips, paying $25 fines. The closures cover Beaverhead River from Clark's Canyon to Ed Roe ranch and Hot Prairie Creek from mouth to Brown ranch line, in effect August 1 to May 20 each year.
Dillon Rotary club heard Professor M. C. Thomas of the Normal college discuss conditions in the Philippines and Java. He described the Queen of the Eastern Archipelago and its progress, religion, government, commerce, and agriculture. Guests Dr. P. Thurber and Tom Greenfield attended. next week’s meeting will be the annual assembly chaired by T. B. Luebben.
A large bull moose wandered within about a mile of Beaverhead town, leaping fences and moving through fields. Blair Sprinkle, Peter J. Peterson and Jack Selway saw the animal from the Peterson ranch as it crossed a highway near the old electric light plant. The moose likely came from the Blacktail area, with forest fires possibly driving deer and other wildlife toward the valley.
With the August arrival Beaverhead county readies the annual fair to be held September 22 23 and 24. New features and an expanded entertainment program aim to surpass previous years despite dry weather. The parade will headline the event with livestock agriculture and industry exhibitions and prizes planned across all classes.
Mrs M D Thibadeau and her daughter from Helena visited the city early in the week at her son W W Thibadeau’s home. She now lives in Coeur d Alene Idaho and went to Butte for the Montana pioneers annual meeting. She rode with Captain Fisk’s wagon train to Bannack in 1862 and recalls the gold rush era vividly.
Dr. S. E Davis, president of Montana State Normal College, is warmly commended in a recent issue of School and Society for his publication The Teacher's Relationships. The piece highlights the work as a notable contribution to educational theory and practice.
