Eighteen Scholarships Awarded By State Normal College

College officials announced eighteen scholarships for State Normal College students for the 1936 37 year based on demonstrated scholarship character and promise. Sophomore recipients include Dorothy Ann Davis Dillon William Bayerd Dillon Kate Sea gren Butte Bernice Erickson Plentywood Anne Hoekema Manhattan Helen Irene Sprout McAllister Jack Veltkamp Manhattan. Junior winners are James Lee Kelly Dillon Arthur De Boer Manhattan Marguerite Peterson Plentywood Frances Alene Brim Sheridan Rosa Lee Brown Armstead Warren Lovinger Fort Benton Violet Harvick Outlook. Senior scholars are Mary A Murphy Butte Harold Dugan Whitefish Gertrude Oliver Red Lodge Rosalie Seitz Bozeman. If not filled by thirty days, offers go to next in rank. no awardee may be outside upper 20 percent of last full year.

Normal Actors Present Four Period Plays

Students at State Normal college presented four period plays in a dramatics department program directed by Professor Bert B. Hansen. The afternoon feature Saved was directed by Genevieve Green with a cast including June Emerson and Ella Foley. Evening items Sparkin and Op-O Me-Thumb opened, followed by Cradle Song directed by Henry Edwards. casts included Genevieve Donaldson, Lucille Peck, Pearl Anderson, and Ruth Oja.

Former Dillon Resident Dies in California

Word comes that Mrs. Margaret Hayter Williams a former Dillon resident died at Ocean Beach California on July 17 at age 65. She was active in the local Eastern Star chapter and is survived by daughter Marjorie Williams in Ocean Beach son Lincoln of Stockton California and brother-in-law E H Williams of Dillon.

Auxiliary Gets State Awards At Conclave

The Dillon chapter of the American Legion Auxiliary won multiple state awards at a Lewistown convention July 25 to 28. Prizes included 5.00 for department secretary membership, 2.00 for national news subscriptions, plus awards for a poppy poster contest and a 1937 history report. Dillon delegate Mrs. Casterline was among twelve pages chosen. other towns represented included Helena Billings Glendive Roundup Miles City Great Falls Cut Bank Augusta Chester and Shelby. Distinguished guests included national auxiliary leaders Mrs. A H Hahn and Mrs. Ella O’Brien and Mrs. Mollie Averill. A large Montana turnout was noted.

Ennis Man Charles Frioh Found Dead In Hotel

Charles Frioh was found dead in an Ennis hotel on Saturday and is described as a death by his own action. He was known in Dillon and the surrounding area, having left town about a year ago after working on ranches across the county.

Orphans Enjoy Dillon Outing With Carnival Rides

Dillon citizens funded a trip for 270 orphans from the State Orphans Home in Twin Bridges. P W Witt donated four trucks to transport the children to Dillon for rides at Witt carnival and a free show at Hartwig theatre. They enjoyed rides on the merry go round ferris wheel and chair a plane followed by a lunch of hot dogs ice cream and punch. They then viewed Trader Horn at Hartwig theatre as guests for the second year in a row, with onlookers praising the event.

The Montana Auto Supply Co. finishes a 12000 dollar remodel of its storage wing into a modern service and repair dept. An open house is set for next Saturday August 7 from 8 am to 5 pm. Henry Wiebur announces details of new floor space stalls equipment and departments.

Body of Butte Man Found in Big Hole River

Sheriff Paul Temple and helpers recovered the body of Edgar L. Roat, a Butte painter, from the Big Hole River near Divide after a daylong search. Roat died after his car plunged down a bank and partially submerged. evidence suggested he was knocked unconscious before entering the water.

Farmers Union Plans Melrose Meeting in Beaverhead County

The Beaverhead-Silver Bow Farmers Union local will hold a regular quarterly meeting in Melrose on Sunday August 8 with a 12 oclock luncheon. Senator J B Garrison and E R Ormsbee are invited to attend and discuss the Educational Cooperative Publishing Company program. Delegates to the state convention will be nominated and reports from committees are planned.

Beaverhead County Budget Set For 1937 38 With Small Increases

Beaverhead county proposes budgets for 1937 38 showing only modest gains over last year with most departments under a 10 percent rise. County officials submitted figures by July 10 and county commissioners will finalize on August 9 after reviewing a second time on August 4.

Drive Starts for Dillon Chamber of Commerce

The Dillon Chamber of Commerce membership drive shows strong progress as Harold M. Warner announces plans to contact all local professionals and businessmen. A $10 annual fee grants full voting rights, with Beaverhead county businesses urged to join to boost county industry and tourism through the new organization.
