Dell Rancher Dies After Brief Illness in Beaverhead County
The veteran rancher and stockman of Beaverhead County, born February 11, 1862, died suddenly at his Dell home last Monday night at age 76. He moved to the area in 1883, worked as cattle foreman, ran a Bedrock Valley ranch, married Mary Helen Peabody in 1892, and is survived by his wife, daughter Nell, and nephew Virgil McKnight. A Masonic funeral will be held Thursday at 2 PM in the Masonic hall, with burial in Mountain View cemetery.

Oldest Gold Scales Exhibit At Stamm's Jewelry Window
The oldest gold scales in the state are shown in the window of Alvert Stamm's jewelry store for a few days. The scales were used by the Jeiber Ferris and White Forwarding Company in Dillon's early days. Mr Stamm has placed them on display for the mining convention this week.

Range Tour Considered Big Success
A range tour through the Ruby valley and Gravely range Friday, hosted by Beaverhead National Forest and the county extension service, was called very successful for Beaverhead and Madison stockmen. Experts from Bozeman and Missoula led talks. grass was excellent though snow appeared on Gravely range heights. Notable participants from Dillon and beyond included J. H. Gilbert Sr. and Jr., and many local representatives.

Motorcyclist Narrowly Escapes Collision on Highway 91
Frederick James McGraw of Sharon Pennsylvania escaped serious injury when his motorcycle was sideswiped by a passing car along Highway 91 five miles north of Dillon Sunday. Ed Sebasky of Butte drove the car and faced arraignment on hit and run or reckless driving after being found two miles north of Divide with gas run out. Mining Convention Opens in Dillon For Western Operators
Mining operators from Montana Washington Idaho and Utah will attend the fourth annual convention of the Mining Association of Montana in Dillon Friday and Saturday. Gov Roy Ayers Senator James Murray and Rep James F OConnor are among speakers. Exhibits drill and mucking contests start Friday noon with a banquet at St James Guild hall and a Dillmont park dance to follow.

Ferko Buys Dillon Grocery From Dickey Family
Andrew Ferko of Kirby Wyoming, a veteran grocer, purchased the retail grocery business at 126 East Glendale Street from J H Dickey and son. The store, founded by Fred L Viel and later run by Dickey since 1922, will see Dickey stay in Dillon with an office in the Beaverhead Abstract building. Ferko, in the grocery trade for 40 years, is married with two sons and a daughter, and his family has moved to Dillon.

Falls contest honors for Beaverhead 4-H at Northern Montana fair
Beaverhead 4-H contestants at the Northern Montana fair in Great Falls earned multiple prizes. John Hartwig placed second in heavy Angus, Charles Green took third and sixth in heavy Angus, and Hartwig’s other Angus entry placed fifth in medium Angus. Rudy Platt’s Chubby earned sixth in heavy Hereford, Green had fifth and twelfth in Herefords, and Harry Tash Jr. had a seventh in light Hereford. The 1938 club livestock show was billed as the biggest and best yet in the state.

Forest Fire Near Jackson Controlled by CCC Crews
A large forest fire at Berry Creek, twelve miles southwest of Jackson in the Big Hole basin, was brought under control Tuesday night. Over 100 workers from the Lolo and Philipsburg CCC camps plus Wisdom and other nearby points fought the blaze after it started Monday afternoon. Earlier that day a small Class A fire was extinguished on Willow Creek. Supervisors urged stricter fire prevention as two man made fires occurred within two days, with aircraft and pack train dispatched from Missoula to assist.

Tick Fever Fatal to Earl Rogers Rancher in Beaverhead County
E W Rogers prominent rancher in the Sheep Creek basin died last Thursday at Barrett hospital after about a week of Rocky Mountain spotted fever. He was 68, born in Olivet Michigan, and arrived in Beaverhead in 1897 joining W M Sweeney to form a long standing partnership. Survived by wife three daughters a nephew and a grandson. Funeral at Brundage chapel with Rev J A Meeke officiating, burial Mountain View Cemetery.
