Rumors spread last Sunday of a blazing airplane crash on McCarthy mountain east of Reichle, with a forest fire visible for miles. Fred Woodside and Harry Robinson inspected the site by night and found no wreckage, while others planned a further search next Sunday.
The newspaper enlists readers in a nationwide Presidential Poll pitting Hoover born in a small town against Smith from a large city. Voters are urged to submit a coupon with an X for their choice. ballots already show 84 percent for Hoover. Results will be reported from New York as voting closes October 11.
All candidates in the primary election filed their expense accounts by last Saturday evening according to county clerk John S. Baker. Most expenses were small, and those who did not meet the grade faced limited charges to profit and loss.
Judge Rodgers reappointed three Beaverhead River water commissioners Frank Ryburn Blair Sprinkle and William Gordon after a dry spell caused water shortage Ranchers had petitioned to dispense with the board citing abundance but the drought renewed need Will Lovell was named commissioner for Medicine Lodge
Members of the state board of equalization Messrs Stewart Muir and Carruth visited Dillon from Helena last week for their annual inspection of Beaverhead county records. They praised county officials for efficient administration and then drove on to Madison County.
John Stewart and George Purdin were fined 27.50 each after pleading guilty to fishing without a license. Sam James was fined 27.50 for fishing with a resident license when not a resident. Judge Opp heard the first two cases, Judge Phillips the third. Deputy state game warden Charles Price arrested the trio.
Mr and Mrs Robert L Allen and Mrs Frank Fox escaped death or serious injury after a car driven by Mr Allen overturned several times about three miles north of the city near the Spehar ranch. The coupe was wrecked with the body caved in and glass broken. all escaped with only scratches and bruises.
A. J. Cashmore, returning from Elkhorn Springs on Wednesday evening last week, drove into a soft spot in Badger pass. The car plunged down a steep bank lined with boulders, didn't overturn, but sustained damage from crashing the rocks. The lone driver escaped with a few bruises from hitting the car’s top.
W. S. Kenyon of the U S Department of Commerce has been in Dillon the past week for the establishment of a new air mail route which began operations Wednesday. He says Dillon may soon be equipped with a wing catching device to handle pouch transfers, enabling direct dispatches from the local field.
Police officers arrested Kleppa Nagel Ralph Strong and Carl Shultz all residents of Idaho after a clothing salesman reported a bad check. They pleaded guilty to vagrancy on Monday and were sentenced to thirty days in the county jail by Judge L P Phillips.
Residents of the east end found a cow owned by C. E. Medsker stuck in an old cesspool behind the John Carroll residence. The animal named Bossy sank to her shoulders in water and mud and was freed only after digging away earth and using a block and tackle.
Morse Waldorf son of A F Waldorf of this city will leave next month for New Orleans and sail to Chile South America where he has accepted a position with the Anaconda Copper Mining company. He is a Montana State College mining engineering graduate and his friends here celebrate his success.
Frank Leroy received a 90 day jail term from Judge L P Phillips after pleading guilty to stealing a watch from a rooming house on Montana street operated by Bertha Taylor. The Thursday afternoon sentencing followed the guilty plea.
Mr and Mrs Don Randolph and family with Mrs Helen Randolph and Mrs Cora will travel Sunday for a week’s outing in Yellowstone park.
John Polson a herder for J E Morse was found with a bullet wound in the Centennial valley near Antelope creek. Investigation suggested an accidental self-inflicted wound amid a thunderstorm, with a coroner’s jury unable to decide if the death was accidental, self-inflicted, or homicidal.
The creamery north of town burned out of control last Saturday morning around six. Smoke blanketed the area as two fire trucks tried to prevent embers from reaching adjacent structures. Owned by Sullivan Brothers, the abandoned site suffered a loss of several hundred dollars with no insurance.
Miss Betty Baker 13, daughter of Mr and Mrs Jay Baker of Portland and granddaughter of Mr and Mrs John S Baker of Dillon, has been acclaimed as one of Portland public schools top students. She won the O S J gold medal for scholarship and the 1812 Daughters gold medal for American history, also earning a silver medal for elementary grades and gave an acceptance speech over the radio. Mrs Faye Stanton of Portland, a former Dillon resident, notified Dillon friends of her achievements.
The Dil lon Country club sports committee plans a round robin event starting August 12 with nine hole qualifying rounds due next week. Bruce Risley Lee McCracken and W B Hartwig lead the committee. Local players have been invited to compete at the Lakeshore course in Butte on August 5 touted as the finest in the state.
Miss Berthana Selway arrived in Dillon on Tuesday from Los Angeles to visit relatives and friends. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Hawley Selway, long associated with the valley ranching community.
Mrs. Chester Gilbert announces a children only parade on August 24 for the annual flower show. Cash prizes for best decorated vehicles. entries include Weycles pony carts kiddie cars wagons and decorated baby carriages. Flowers flourish despite insect pests.
Ira Higgs of Draper Utah was walking with a companion when a Price Utah driver Claude L McCracken struck him. Higgs suffered cuts and bruises on both elbows. Wind and dust reduced visibility and the driver could not hear the horn. McCracken helped the injured man to town and his wounds were dressed by Dr Poindexter. Higgs said the motorist was not responsible.
Secretary of Agriculture William Jardine visits relatives and old friends in the Big Hole basin this week. Locals welcome him as an adopted Montanan who has excelled in Washington and express pride in his achievements and visit.
Charles and Bob McArthur of Butte visit the city, staying with their aunts Mrs Jack Lockness and Mrs Homer Harrison at their homes.
F. C. McFadden, a business visitor to Butte, was noted during his early week visit.
