Civil War Crater Battle Recreated In Historic Petersburg Event
Spectators in Petersburg will witness a staged Civil War battle with the Devil Dogs and cadets reenacting 1864 defenses. Dr Douglas Southall Freeman will describe the action by loudspeaker as the Union mine under the lines at Petersburg explodes, and the ensuing chaos, casualties, and lessons of the Crater are recalled with vivid detail. Local history notes the nine month siege, Pleasants pioneering mine, and Meade Grant Meade disagreements over use of black troops, ending in a costly Confederate victory and a reminder of the wartime engineering feats still visible in the area.
