National Forest week observed in Dillon from April 22 to 28 with shop windows and school programs featuring forest scene displays. Posters from the forestry department urge fire prevention and adherence to woods rules as President Coolidge calls for stronger forest policies and nationwide protection against fires.
Ralph McFadden head of the Montana State Normal College piano department gave a Friday recital at Irene St. Quentin’s studio in Butte under the Senior Music club. Fifty members and guests praised his mastery with works by Beethoven Chopin Liszt and more. A young Butte violinist Cullen Smith showcased two pieces and an informal reception followed. McFadden will play for the Junior club this morning.
The Beaverhead County High School alumni group met at the Andrus hotel parlors and voted to hold a banquet for the graduating class replacing the usual dance. Officers elected include Miss Julia Anderson president and William Lloyd vice president with Miss Marie Boger secretary and Miss Mary Schoenborn treasurer.
A note highlights intelligent and understanding support aimed at improving forestry conditions both locally and nationally. It underscores cooperative action and public backing for sustainable forest management and conservation initiatives.
Alfred Emanuel Smith born 1878 in New York City rose from street vendor to governor. He served 12 straight Assembly terms, sheriff of New York County, and led as governor four times with a liberal reform agenda. Next week Herbert Hoover.
Dillon will host two county conventions on May 8 to elect delegates and alternates for Helena conventions on May 15. A. F. Waldorf chairs the Republican central committee with J. E. Kelly for the Democrats. Precinct committeemen are expected and entertained during their stay. New filings include Gladys Garr and Montana Gilbert for Republican superintendent of schools, George Opp for justice of the peace, James Phillips for coroner, Fred Rife for clerk of the district court, and W. C. Orr for sheriff, with six office seekers already listed.
Mrs Ethel Henry and her sister Mrs Phil Sheridan arrived Monday to visit Lee Henry foreman at the Tribune shop who is a Barrett hospital patient after undergoing a 47 operation for appendicitis early last week.
Dr and Mrs A H McFarland and zon Junior motor to Missoula last Sunday for a short trip.
W C Orr IIT and Miss Ruth Gelhaus from Dillon are named on the honor roll for the winter quarter reflecting academic achievement and school recognition.
Frank M. Kerr announced Montana Power has permission to install a large fish hatchery at the abandoned Divide power plant. The Anglers' club will use part of the buildings while troughs and equipment are installed. Two units of ten troughs each will supply 2,000,000 fry capacity, aiding angling across the Big Hole River and tributaries.
Miss Georgia Metlen won first place in the local extemporaneous readings contest at the high school last week to represent the town at the state contest in Missoula on May 11 during the state track meet. Jean Ballard King Larson and Gertrude Price also entered. judges were Bernice Hirschman Genevieve Metlen and Mary Schoenborn.
Miss Agnes Conger, daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Conger long time Dillon residents, wed John Roy Mogus in Anaconda on Monday this week. The couple plan a coast honeymoon and will reside in Anaconda after.
At a noon Dillon Rotary meeting at the Andrus hotel five directors were elected: L K Adams C Ef Blinn H L McCaleb J I Monroe and Dr W H Stephan. They will appoint officers later. Talks by W H Elofson forestry supervisor and Tom Lommason grazing supervisor covered Beaverhead National Forest fires timber, grazing, and a beetle campaign.
Mrs. E. T. Rich a trained nurse from Bozeman arrived early in the week to visit Abe Savacool a well known old time resident of the city who is recovering from a serious illness at Barrett hospital.
Mr Price and Mrs Price moved to Butte Monday with Mrs Price returning Tuesday and Mr Price remaining several days to handle business matters.
Freckles Mallon tied the course record with an offical par of 1 under while playing in a foursome with Dr. W H Stephan W G Gilbert and H M Brundage He finished even par 86 on the ninth hole and birdies helped offset two difficult holes Mrs W H Stephan set a club record with a 49 in the same day The morning duffer tournament saw eight beginners led by W D Ross and Roy Forrester tie 59 as the course this week began a tee box reshuffle and fairway improvements setting stage for May tournaments
Murray F. Stebbins secretary of the Montana Woolgrowers association spent days in Dillon and county trips with Howard Morse to discuss stockyard and shipping facility upgrades. The Great Northern railroad will invest about 65,000 this year and Union Pacific’s Harry Coulam pledged improvements within reason for Beaverhead stockmen. A few loading-station changes along the Oregon Short Line are needed to boost service. In the county tour Stebbins and Morse recruited 14 new association members.
