First assembly held to mark the opening of the college week as football practice begins and enrollment rises to 368, ten more than last year. Swimming pool cleaned and schedule announced while Freshman Week continues with upbeat student participation and anticipated further gains.
Engineer Croonenberg of the state federal highway department spoke at the Dillon Rotary Club on Monday outlining the Armstead Salmon Road project and how federal highway loan regulations allocate funds. The talk covered the road's route to Salmon City and the total funds available from federal sources.
Copies of big game hunting season regulations for Montana opened October 15 and closed October 15 arrived in Dillon from the state fish and game commission at Helena. In Melrose last Saturday Beaverhead County Federation of Women's Clubs held its twenty second semi annual meeting with Mrs Hazelbaker Gilbert McFadden Stickney Davis taking active roles representing local groups. Delegates from all member clubs attended the session.
Marie Gibson a 89 year old professional broncho rider from Havre Montana died in Idaho Falls after her horse fell at a rodeo. She suffered a fractured skull and was taken to a hospital where she died. Her sons Lucian and Andrew and husband Thomas Gibson survive. The body will be taken to Havre for burial.
A public hearing is set for Oct 14 as county commissioners consider creating Montana's first horse herd district. The Silver Bow and Gregson Springs petition would authorize the stock inspector to round up and impound stray horses, with fees charged to owners and unclaimed animals sold by the sheriff. Proceeds fund the county general fund.
Official confirmation was issued for the appointment of Harry J. Andrus Jr as Dillon postmaster. He plans to take duties at the start of the month, succeeding J C Fuller who has eight years of service with a strong record. Andrus is a Beaverhead county native with Dillon schooling and further studies at San Diego Army and Navy academy and the University of Montana.
Andy Williams was seen last Saturday at Dillon visiting from his ranch near Alder. The sighting places the entertainer in the Montana town while continuing his ranching interests nearby.
The state retirement fund board decided on $85 checks for 186 eligible teachers for the next quarter. Secretary Miss Jessie McKenna announced after the quarterly meeting that payments will go out after September 30. Funds come from each teacher contributing $1 monthly. several board members attended, with Miss Elizabeth Treland absent.

Helena Montana officials expect the Montana state highway commission to decide on announcing the proposed sale to the public works board of 1 250 000 dollars in highway debentures. The panel meets Thursday to open bids and let contracts for 1 000 000 dollars in road and bridge projects and to consider government action.
Dr E G Free Miss Edith Saxon and Homer Faust suffered serious cuts and bruises when a Chevrolet coupe collided with two horses south of Dillon near the Van Camp bridge. Both horses died and the occupants were hospitalized. Free and Faust were released Sunday. The crash underscores ongoing livestock on the federal highway.
Montana plans for its participation on Montana day at the Century of Progress exposition were finalized in Chicago. Gov. Frank H. Cooney announced 17 Montana day commissioners after meetings with fair officials and rail executives. Names include Glacier park Superintendent E. T. Scoven and Yellowstone park Superintendent Roger Toll.
Beaverhead public works plan lists multiple dam and reservoir projects with estimated costs and labor. Lima dam 8140,000 with 270 men for two months. Grasshopper dam 200,000 with 100 men for one year. Rim reservoir 15,000 with 80 men for three months. Minneopa reservoir 10,000 with 80 men for two months. Boatman lake 10,000 with 30 men. Harris lake 10,000 with 80 men for two months. Mussigbrod lake 5,000 with 15 men for two months. Miners lake 5,000 with 15 men.
John H. Keenan longtime rancher in Beaverhead valley near Dillon died last Sunday at his ranch home after years of failing health. He was 66 and was born in Ireland, with his death a shock to friends across the county.
Governor Cooney will present to Washington a list of 164 irrigation and flood control plans costing 42.3 million dollars. The program would create about 16 000 jobs and is the largest Montana project ever considered. Accompanying Cooney are State Engineer James and Relief Director Spaulding, joining the state’s congressional delegation.

Two thousand four hundred applications from home owners were received at the Home Owners' Loan Corporation state headquarters in Great Falls between Aug 1 and Sept 1. The total amount applied for is 4.8 million dollars, figures released by E. C. Carruth, state manager.
