Lisa and Missouri Fur Co Pioneers in Montana Trade
Manuel Lisa built Montana’s first fort at Three Forks and organized the Missouri Fur Co with $40,000 capital drawing investors in St. Louis. The venture aimed to trade with the Crow and Blackfeet but violence after Lewis killed a Gros Ventre doomed posts, circling to 1819 until Lisa’s death dissolved the company.

Private Park Welcomes Betsy the Moose and Two Deer
Betsy the moose, rescued from drowning in the Wise River, joins two young deer at Frank Hazelbaker’s private game preserve in southwestern Montana. Supt. A G Stubblefield says feeding the animal trio at the Washoe park hatchery was costly, so they move to the 80 to 100 acre preserve where elk, buffalo and deer already roam. The state retains ownership of the animals.
