Ben Holladay, famed Overland stage founder, built a vast network across the Missouri to California, managing 5000 miles of routes with 5000 horses and 500 coaches. His venture prospered during the Civil War, but Indian raids and Union Pacific competition later ruined him, leading to sale of his line and a modest estate by 1877.
