Ten Local Men Among Nation's Half Million

Be noted among the first 250 draft numbers drawn in Washington D C were Beaverhead county men. Local student appeals for colleges on Referendum 42

Dillon Normal college senior William Boetticher spoke Sunday evening on the Z-Bar network in support of Referendum 42 to perpetuate the Greater University system with six Montana schools. He noted a proposed 3 percent mill levy, a half mill increase over the current levy in force since 1930, needed to handle 46 percent enrollment growth since 1930 and to retain educators from the Treasure State.

Beaverhead County Man Dies After Tree Felling Accident

Archie Barr 54 longtime Beaverhead resident dies from injuries when a tree he was cutting on Oct 18 fell and fractured his skull. Barr operated cafes in Lima Medina Centennial valley Wisdom and leaves a wife. Funeral at Brundage chapel Friday 2:00 pm officiated by Rev. Meeke.

Woodcraft officials visit Whitehall chapter event

Floyd J. Davis Dies in Butte After Illness

Floyd J. Davis, longtime Dillon resident and former Davis Motors employee, died this morning in a Butte hospital after a three week illness. He played in Dillon’s softball program last summer and is survived by three children Raymond Hazel and Dolores of Dillon plus seven brothers. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

Beavers Take Early Lead In Stifling Reds Defense

Nine of the 1940 Beaver football squad played their last game for Beaver head county high school as they baffled the Butte Reds 7 0 on the Cardinals home field. Beavers intercepted the Reds seven times in the opening half and 11 times overall while red zone miscues limited scoring opportunities. A key punt block near the Beavers 10 yard line and a near touchdown thwarted by a stumble highlight the defensive showcase.

The Beaverhead county Hereford show and sale concluded with 64 bulls selling for an average of 266.80. Nay brothers of Bannack bought 19 head for 6245.00, including the grand champion Beau Brackett 26th sold for 600.00 to Nay brothers.

Ricks Squad Crushes Bull Dogs 41-0 on Rough-Rider offense

The Bulldogs of Montana State Normal were shut out 41-0 by Ricks College Rexburg Idaho as Rick’s Rough Riders score mainly by breaking through midfield and outrunning the defense. Montana State Normal managed 11 first downs but couldn't reach the end zone.

Beaverhead County Republican Women Meet Before Election

The Beaverhead County Republican Women’s club held its final meeting before the general election in the county courthouse. Prof Rush Jordan addressed the group on party history and the two party system. Officers chosen include Mrs Earl W Opp as president Miss Helga Anderson as vice president and Mrs Wes Mares as secretary treasurer. A Republican rally is urged for next Friday evening November 1 with state committee woman Mrs T E Luebben praising the group’s efforts.

Turkey shoot at Jackson to showcase ordnance and rifles

A turkey shoot will be held in Jackson on Sunday November 3 sponsored by John Krause owner of the Jackson pool hall and trap shooting equipment. The event features three divisions in A B and C classes to keep amateurs from facing top marksmen. Dillon sportsmen plan to attend and more similar events may follow if turnout is strong.

Pioneer Style Ranch Party At Wisdom Knights 1860s Night

At the Hirschy ranch near Wisdom last Saturday evening, Judge Sanders Henry Plummers frock-coated gamblers and other pioneer figures enjoyed lavish sourdough biscuits and veni son stew. Mrs Hirschy and Miss Sprinkle led a Vigilante party plan with about 65 guests in pioneer costumes dancing and playing 1860s era games. Coins and currency issued for the occasion circulated as in 1862 when cards and the roulette wheel turned fortunes.
