Campaign gains momentum as general election day nears. Community leaders and local residents rally to support tax initiatives, signaling a pivotal close to the Beaverhead County tax drive. Voter outreach increases with town halls and targeted advertisements.
The November issue of the Bulletin of the Montana Congress of Parents and Teachers outlines the ATEP program for American Education Week from November 10 to 16. Contributors include Garry Myers Arthur Chrisman Alma Wretling and others. The issue features state and national PTA news and is mailed to members and educators statewide.
Figures announced by the clerk and recorder show 1930 county and trust tax totals at 384 647 85 reflecting a small decrease from 1929. The county portion lists road and other taxes with published shifts in values and valuations across Lima Dillon and surrounding districts.
Leaders forecast a large turnout next Tuesday as Beaverhead county voters head to private booths to cast ballots. Clerk John B. Baker announced election supplies mailed to precincts and more than 120 absent voters ballots issued, signaling rising election interest.
The American Legion auxiliary held a successful Monday night meeting at the L. D. 8. church. A business session preceded the initiation of eight candidates: Mrs. W. S. Gorman, Mrs. Glen Lyone, Mrs. Louis Schmit troth, Mrs. William McMannus, Mrs. Rose Sin Claire, Mrs. C. M. Bonnafield, Mrs. H. J. Bostwick, and Mrs. Leroy Gilbert. A large gathering enjoyed entertainment in the basement.
Boy Scouts paid tribute to Theodore Roosevelt, one of the organization’s original sponsors, during a Monday night program at the training school auditorium. Hon. Frank Eliel delivered a rising address on The Life of Roosevelt, with Melding Graves offering a Roosevelt tribute. Beaverhead County High School Band and State Normal College Glee Club performed, Rev F X Lechner led singing, colors were posted and retired, and slides on Roosevelt and Scouting were shown.
In 1921 Tom Gilbert recounts prosecuting Young E Hurt for cattle theft, with a jury convict and a two to five year sentence. He notes Hart captured near the Mexican border after a major search by Sheriff Dan Mooney’s deputies and extradition.
Alvin C. Reeves aged 65 died last Thursday morning at his East Glendale home after a lingering illness. Heart trouble caused his death. A Dillon resident for about two and a half years he worked as a harness maker at Johnson Trading Co after moving from Kalispell. Born in Toronto Kansas he leaves a widow and several relatives. Funeral was held Saturday at Brundage chapel with Rev. T. J. Simons officiating and burial in Mountain View Cemetery.
Ambret Eliel, Red Cross chairman for Beaverhead county, outlined plans for the annual membership drive from November 11 to 20. The event includes a dance at the auditorium with Baxter Tonrey orchestra and a Majestic radio raffle. Community chairmen will be named to organize the drive ahead of the kickoff.
Principal W. W. Wahl of Beaverhead County High School was elected president of the western division of the Montana Education Association at the annual Butte convention. About 60 Dillon educators attended the event, with many taking active roles.
Hundreds attend as the Galen Methodist Episcopal church gears up for its golden anniversary next weekend. Montana church leaders including Bishop Wallace Brown of Helena and Rev. Jesse Lacklen of Billings lead a program starting with a banquet Saturday night. Former ministers Rev. Edward Smith Butte Rev. Robert Smith Bozeman and Rev. H G Humphrey Gooding Ida participate. Brown preaches Sunday morning and a Sunday afternoon service is set for Bannack.
Judge Albert J. Galen Republican US Senate hopeful delivered a forceful address at the Hartwig theatre last Thursday night. The rally drew a full house with standing room, and fellow candidates Mark D. Fitzgarrald and Leonard C. Young spoke. Galen argued tariff benefits for Beaverhead livestock, citing wool prices in Canada and Montana to refute opponents’ claims.
Western Wholesale Grocery, a leading regional wholesale firm, announced it will go out of business. A letter to local business men cited adverse territory conditions. The stock will be sold and operations continue until goods are disposed of. the firm was founded 15 years ago.
The junior high honor roll requirements have been raised requiring no F or D, at most three C's, and at least one A with citizenship A or B. Twenty-nine pupils qualified this period, including 7B, Merriam Balka 2,714, Doro.
A deal was struck this week in Butte transferring the Pure Food Stores system, including the local store, to MacMarr Stores Inc a grocer operating in several western states.
Beaverhead county high school band will accompany the team to Deer Lodge for a pregame parade and luncheon. Two major auctions are planned: C. C. Montgomery estate sale at Price ranch near Monida next Saturday with livestock, machinery and household goods starting at 1 p.m., auctioneer Col. Luther S. Smith. Steve Lasich ranch sale near Dillon on Thursday Nov 6 lists 70 head of livestock and farm items starting at 10 a.m., lunch at noon, auctioneer Col. Luther S. Smith.
Frank Allen, 26, escaped from Undersheriff Carl Hartwig while being returned from Idaho Falls. The escape occurred as a northbound Passenger train stopped near Spencer Idaho. Allen gained freedom when granted a lavatory visit and the alarm was raised only after about 30 minutes. Continued on page 8.
Beaverhead county High School Future Farmers of America plans its father and son banquet next Monday evening at the school. Dinner will be served by home economics girls, with J. E. Borden as guest speaker.
