Sylvester P. Meade county assessor attended a Helena meeting of the County Assessors Association along with County Commissioners Association and state bankers association representatives. Robert Frankfurter, 39, a bachelor farmer from Broadus in Powder River county, is bound over to district court on involuntary manslaughter charges in the death of Clarence J. Skaggs, a Broadus garage mechanic, who was killed during a hunting trip near the May creek area along the Beaverhead Ravalli boundary. The case stems from an inquest that found the fatal shot was fired by Frankfurter with a .30-06 rifle as the two men hunted with others. the incident occurred about 11:30 Tuesday morning after the pair separated for the day. Frankfurter posted a $2,500 bond after arraignment and waived preliminary hearing.
Riverside Farm Bureau committee led by Mrs Lucy Hayden plans a public election night dance at City Hall auditorium. Proceeds go to Dillon and rural Volunteer Fire Departments. Six orchestras will play hourly 9 p m to 2 a m. Joe Renfro of Bedrock will call square dances. foods will be auctioned. County election returns will be received during the evening.
Letters to all delinquent personal property taxpayers are sent from County Treasurer Martha Greene. The action follows State Examiner instructions to list delinquent taxes for the November county commissioners meeting. The list will go to the sheriff for seizure and sale unless delinquencies are paid.
Mrs Frank Hazelbaker announces that Harriet Miller campaigns in Dillon for state superintendent. A host of Republican women gave open house and coffee at headquarters from 10:30 to noon to meet the candidate with several Dillon area hostesses and supporters attending.
County commissioners set polling places and named judges for the general election on Tuesday November 6. The official minutes list each precinct’s polling place judge and voter registration totals with hours: 8 am–8 pm for precincts over 100 voters 1 pm–3 pm for precincts under 100.
The Beaverhead Farm Bureau held its annual gathering last Saturday with all five county units represented. Bernard Harkness of Dell was elected county president, succeeding Roy ZeBarth of Jackson, as officers also include Bill Nelson of Jackson as vice president and Mrs. Jean Harkness of Dell as county women's president. Judge W. W. Lessley of Bozeman spoke on government separation of powers and the Governor’s Committee on child welfare and juvenile delinquency. The banquet honored retiring president ZeBarth with an electric clock gift from the five county units. Voting delegates to the state convention in Great Falls will be chosen at upcoming unit meetings.
The Dillon Hereford Show and Sale is under way at the County Fair Grounds with show at 9:00 and sale at 1:30. Judge Tay lor McNiven of Livingston and auctioneer H B Sager of Bozeman preside as 50 bulls from Montana top herds compete in 26 Futurity and 24 open entries. 432 average price last year and a Bull Sale jackpot run by Frank Madden.
Congressman Lee Metcalf and Attorney General Arnold Olsen will headline a Friday rally at city hall under the Beaverhead Democratic Central Committee. Also speaking are Paul Cannon Frank Murray Mary Condon Carl M Davis and John Prohosky. Free coffee and doughnuts to follow social hour.
The Beaverhead County High School yearbook The Beaver was one of 17 to receive an all state rating from the Montana Interscholastic Editorial Association at its seventh annual meeting in Missoula on October 20. Edward B. Dugan, journalism professor and advisor, distributed the awards which also included 17 All-State, 25 Superior and 8 Good ratings.
Dillon public schools and Beaverhead county high school will close Thursday and Friday as teachers attend the Helena convention. Convening cities include Billings Great Falls Glasgow and Missoula with speakers of national repute scheduled for each convention.
Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce directors endorse a proposed 3-mill county road tax increase to fund road building and maintenance. County Commissioners Davis and Prohosky attended as the board reviewed costs since 1914 and noted traffic and livestock movement. Davis warned current 10-mill revenue is insufficient and it would take two years after implementation to balance the budget. A plan to consolidate county offices drew discussion but no action.
The report from Western College weather station records an average weekly high of 61 degrees and a sub freezing average low of 28. Snow showers were noted in the high mountains with a light snow on surrounding hills this Wednesday morning.
