He cites 5.2 billion yearly for armed research and says available rocket program efforts are already as efficient as possible. Economy advocates urge cautious speed, with limited additional funding only if clearly needed.
The piece recalls Theodore Roosevelt speaking to 5 000 Michigan students in 1910 at Ann Arbor. It describes Roosevelt controlling hecklers with swift decisive action and delivering a vivid impression of his leadership. The anecdote ends with a note it continues on page 9.
Higgins Brothers of Ringling and Lewis and Jarboe of Kozeman took the leading honors at the 20th annual Hereford Bull Show and Futurity in Montana. Champion of the Open Class went to a Higgins Brothers bull, while a Higgins bull earned Reserve Champion of the Futurity. Lewis and Jarboe claimed the Futurity Champion and Open Class Reserve. Next in line were top entries from Green Ranch Herefords, Becker Herefords, Modern Design Herefords, Harrie B. Landers, and Dan F. Landers in Open, with Modern Design and Pioneer Hereford Ranch among Futurity runners-up. The awards were presented at a banquet at the Elks Club, as sales began at 1:30 p.m.
Dr. Robert English presided at the Dillon Rotary meeting as Clifford Mockel, Dillon Toastmasters president, explained the club’s role in helping members speak before groups. Several members gave talks and Mockel invited new applicants to join the Toastmasters program.
The annual district Make It Yourself With Wool contest runs Saturday at Beaverhead County High School starting 2 p.m. with self-made garments judged at 1 p.m. Six counties Powell Deer Lodge Silver Bow Jefferson Madison and Beaverhead send entrants. Prizes include Pendleton skirts and fathers receive gifts. top juniors and seniors earn trips to Miles City in December, leading to the state and national Woolgrowers conventions in Phoenix.
City aldermen meeting with Mayor Lovell voted to shut down the street paving job until further notice. Kiely Construction Co. of Butte received written order from City Attorney Gilbert Jr. Delays from recent storms and approaching cold weather influenced the decision as work on streets south of Helena remains incomplete.
City Attorney W G Gilbert Jr told PTA members the Dillon 12 mph school zone limit will be strictly enforced with tickets for violators. He noted rules require full stops at crosswalks when occupied and pedestrians to the sidewalk. Also stated bicycles may not carry passengers or ride on sidewalks.
Robert E. Merriam of the Bureau of the Budget assures Senator Mans that Interior Department estimates for East Bench Unit construction will be carefully considered within the administration's budget framework. Final decisions depend on overall budgetary policies. The letter responds to Mansfield and Murray urging funding in FY 1959 budget.
An Alcoholics Anonymous open meeting will be held Friday evening October 25 at 8:00 in the Vigilante Electric building. Out of town speakers from Butte Helena Anaconda Missoula and other cities will conduct the program and a social hour with refreshments will follow.
Beaverhead wool growers receive word from the Dillon ASC that the 1958 short wool incentive price remains 62 cents per pound, 95 percent of parity. Payments under the 1958 program will follow 1957 methods, with lamb and wool incentives paid in 1959 for activity from April 1, 1958 to March 31, 1959. Records of wool and lamb sales are urged for proper applications.
St Rose Parish Dillon advances a $50,000 Building Fund drive to build a new rectory and expand facilities. Chairman T F McFadden says the organizational phase nears completion with 126 volunteers in place and the public campaign set to begin Sunday November 3. Reverend Bernard J Sullivan leads the effort.
Mike Gregovich proprietor of the Dillon Hotel received a suspended three year term in state prison and license revocation after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in a collision that killed his father John Gregovich on August 17 1956 near Glen Dillon Butte highway. District Court Judge Philip C Duncan presided with County Attorney Carl M Davis and attorney J J McCaffery Jr representing the defendant. The case relates to a two car crash that left John Gregovich fatally injured at a Butte hospital.
Herb Wheat secretary treasurer of Vigilante Electric Co op was re elected director for the southwestern district and vice president of the state rural electrics association at a Livingston convention last week Bruce Watters also re appointed chairman of the state power use committee overseeing the Youth Electric Program Watters wrote a leading Rural Electric article on the Montana Association Youth Electric effort originated under his guidance with the Vigilante Cooperative
Beaverhead county to conduct tuberculin skin tests for all students including high school pupils on November 18. The Beaverhead Tuberculosis Association announces the plan with the School Certification committee coordinating at the state level. Tests will take place at public school buildings and the Lima school, with arrangements for children to be brought to Dillon or Lima.
A Western College weather station notes a light storm across Montana with only .04 inch of precipitation in Dillon. The record covers highs and lows from October 16 to October 22, showing ranges from mid 40s to low 60s and nightly frost around 15 degrees on Wednesday morning. Total precipitation for the week listed as 0.30 inches.
