W P Pilgeram state lands commissioner conducted an October 13 auction at the Beaverhead County courthouse selling nine tracts totaling 796.64 acres to buyers including Earl Tash Henry Meine the Smiths Demar and Vaughn Taylor Rudolph Ruegsegger and the Smiths for prices ranging from 10 to 37 per acre. Commissioner Pilgeram called the sale satisfactory with Mrs Pilgeram accompanying him.

Mrs Mildred Alcott Newell has been engaged to teach English I and II and speech at Beaverhead County High School filling the vacancy left by Joe Ryburn who moved to the School of Mines. Newell, wife of Elmer Frost Newell, arrived in Dillon from Georgetown Lake after operating Haggin Spring Dude Ranch. She holds degrees from Ohio Wesleyan and Oberlin, taught in Ohio schools, and served with the Red Cross overseas during World War II.

Montana's state fish and game commission announced an eight day pheasant hunting season from noon November 5 to 5 p.m. November 12 1950 with daily bag and possession limits of two cock pheasants. Dillon city council awarded the test-well contract to Walter Rittick of Helena after deciding to drill to test underground waters for a reliable supply. A special bond election was set for December 28, 1950 to approve water and sewer revenue bonds totaling about 150,000 for a backbone sewer system and a central sewage disposal plant to serve a city of 5,000.

Explosion Burns Local Residents at Their Home
Mr and Mrs Dale Lessey of 113 N Pacific Street were treated for second degree burns at Barrett hospital after an explosion in the basement of their home last Friday evening. The bottled artificial gas system exploded suddenly blowing out windows and doors and burning the homeowners. Cause of the blast is unknown.

Frederick R. Opp, 52, died Tuesday morning at St Patricks hospital Missoula after a long illness. Born August 3 1898 in Philipsburg he was the son of the late George Opp and Mrs Opp of Dillon. Survived by wife Agnes and son Fred of Anaconda his mother three brothers and sisters in Dillon Bozeman and Earl Opp of Dillon and a sister-in-law in Dillon. The Dillon Ski club held a meeting at City Hall to elect officers and discuss the Elk horn ski run. Dick Later was named head, with Mrs. Marshall Harvey as vice president, and Mrs. Ed Wight as secretary treasurer. The new 3000 foot Elkhorn run near the McCracken property will be finished soon with a moved lift nearly installed, capable of handling 250 skiers in all weather. Mrs. Harvey will instruct beginners and amateurs, inviting adults and children to learn this winter sport.
