Local Selective Service Board Classifications Released

The local selective service board yesterday issued classifications listing 1-A 1-C 2-A and 2-B designations for numerous individuals. Several promotions transfers and assignments in the military are noted including Lt Francis Tonney promotion in Corpus Christi and Tech Sgt Paul Stahl Jr transfer to Camp McCoy. Dale Tash Jr departs Dillon for Buckley Field to begin air corps training and Vincent Gibbons returns to Dillon to meet his newborn daughter.

Mizpah Chapter Marks 50 Years in East ern Star Celebration

Mizpah chapter number 13 of the Order of Eastern Star celebrated its fiftieth anniversary at the Masonic hall with a 6 30 banquet and business session led by past matrons and past patrons. Officers listed include worthy matron Mrs George Dart and worthy patron Robert F Wing with staff members for the ceremony.

Hugh Clark of the Navy spoke to the Dillon Rotary Club about Gales ton Texas where he is stationed. He described hurricanes and waterfront protections, and explained patrol boats that escort convoys and train junior officers.

Local Garage Men Aid ODT Parts Plan

Dillon garage men support the Office of Defense Transportation plan to exchange vital repair parts. At a Thursday city hall meeting, Carl S Bowman outlined the process for sourcing parts via the ODT office in Butte, with a nationwide search if needed. Frank Tyro named local representative of the plan.

Stolen Truck Recovered Near Nissler Viaduct

A truck owned by Herman Peterson was stolen from its parking place late Monday night and recovered early yesterday morning at the Nissler viaduct by Butte officers notified by Sheriff John Troupe. The driver, L. W. Patrick, was arrested and brought to Dillon. Maggie Mertz was arrested on forgery charges and bound over to district court.

Talent Couple Visits Bozeman Daughter at Montana State

Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Talent spent the weekend in Bozeman visiting their daughter Golda who is attending Montana State College.

Council Unable to Help Aphid Control

The city council struggled to obtain a suitable sprayer for aphid control on large shade trees. Used orchard sprayers proved ineffective for Dillon’s trees, and a new machine could not be bought due to priority allocations for food production. The outlook for a change remains doubtful in the near term.

Beaverhead High Beats Anaconda Central 6–0 For Second Win

Beaverhead County High School defeated Anaconda Central 6 to 0 at the fairgrounds field on Friday night. Dick Krause and Charlie Davis drove the scoring drive to the two yard line and over for the only touchdown. The Beavers improve to 2–1 after a 13–0 loss to Butte Central and a 13–0 win over the Butte Reds, with next games in Butte on Friday Oct 22 and against Anaconda Central Friday Oct 29.

The Beaverhead Federation of Women’s clubs will hold its semi annual meeting at the Montana State Normal college residence hall parlors next Saturday Oct 16 with the Dillon Shakespeare club as hostess. Two sessions will be held the morning program at 10 30 including singing invocation by Mrs. Leslie Jones of Wise River address of welcome by Mrs. W E Willey response by Mrs. Warren L Hughes of Wise River report by Miss Eleanor Nelson talk on Wartime Citizenship by Miss Evelyn Rimel business session luncheon at 1 30 at the home of Mrs. Arthur Brown afternoon program at 2 30 features vocal solos by Miss Alice Davis and Miss June Tasa with accompaniment and a dramatic performance directed by Miss Myrtle Savidge.

Beaverhead Foxes Featured on National Fur Calendar

Illustrations of Beaverhead county foxes appear on fur calendars distributed nationwide. The Montana Fox and Fur Breeder's association held its tenth annual educational meeting at the Andrus hotel. Speakers included Mike Beberer of the Seattle Fur Exchange and Charles Garfield of the Fur Journal of Seattle, addressing local growers from Butte and Lima.

Wisdom Man Joe Greenwood Dies in Portland Home

Word reaches Beaverhead county of the death of Joe Greenwood, former Wisdom resident, at his son Clarence’s home in Portland Oregon. He was born August 29 1870 and moved to the Big Hole basin in 1920. Funeral services were held in Portland.

Community Train Service Dillon Is Appreciated

A letter from Wallace Skinner of Manhattan to a friend credits Dillon Montana for outstanding USO support during a Navy furlough. He notes the Dillon train stop provided candy magazines and cigarettes, praising Montana as the best state in the Union and recalling travels from Richmond to San Francisco.

Scotty Tait Dies in Dillon Home at 52

Alexander Scotty Tait 52 former Beaverhead American Legion commander and Dillon US Employment office manager died Monday morning at his Dillon residence from a heart attack. Born in Duntocher Scotland January 4 1891 he moved to Montana with his family in 1911. He served in World War I with the 91st division in France earning the Croix de Guerre and later worked at the Dillon post office and as a deputy sheriff.

N C Murray also known as Skeets Murray led the commercial league with a high single of 220 and a 594 three game series. Virginia Lay was top woman bowler last Wednesday and Merle's Beauty Shop led the women’s team with 1905. Gosman’s Drug squad holds eight wins and one loss, while Tribune is runner up. Gosman’s also posted the high game at 963 and the 2733 series.

Slow Christmas mail to Dillon service men warned

Postmaster Harry J. Andrus reports mailing of Christmas packages to local ex-service men is well below expectations. The Army mail deadline is October 15 and Navy by November 1. Overseas parcels may not reach recipients before Christmas. Only about half the needed packages have been mailed from Dillon and vicinity. The government will strive to ensure delivery, but timely mailing is required.

Wikidahl Funeral Held at Brundage Chapel

Funeral for Joseph F Wikidahl longtime Dillon resident who died Tuesday after a lingering illness was held Friday afternoon at Brundage chapel. Rev Calvin Logan of the Presbyterian church officiated with Dillon lodge No 1554 BPCE members assisting. Pallbearers included William Mitchell Fred Woodside Elmo Winn Don Randolph Al Feath erly and Paul Stahl. Burial followed at Mountain View cemetery. Relatives in attendance included Mr and Mrs Clifford Ewing Mrs Tom Landers of San Bernardino Calif and Mr and Mrs Eric Williamson of Charlo Calif. Out-of-town friends attended.

Hereford Stock Show and Sale Planned in Dillon

One of Montana's major stock events will be held in Dillon on October 17 and 18 with a Hereford show and sale at the county fair grounds pavilion. 83 cattle will be offered Monday plus the third Montana Futurity judged by Herbert Chandler of Baker Oregon.

Floyd Edward Moreland supervisor of the Pacific Fruit and Produce Co. of Southern Idaho and Eva Mae Pentz both of Pocatello were married in the city today by Mayor Bert Megquire. They will reside in Pocatello.

George R. Baker Named Head of Local Employment Office

George R. Baker will assume charge of the United States employment offices here succeeding the late Alexander Tait. Baker, a long time Beaverhead county deputy and former post office clerk, served in World War I and has led the Beaverhead American Legion post as adjutant. He begins his new duties at once.

Bayers Hereford Sale Set Butte Saturday October 28

The annual Bayers Hereford sale will be held at Butte on Saturday October 23 announced by owner A C Bayers. One hundred five head of registered yearling Herefords from the Bayers ranch Twin Bridges will be offered for sale with 65 bulls and 40 females. Females go in the morning and bulls in the afternoon.

Burrell Girl Seriously Cuts Both Arms In Fall

Karen Burrell, 10, suffered deep cuts when she fell through a greenhouse window at home. She required fourteen stitches and is reported to be recovering satisfactorily.

Dillon citizens committee met at city hall to compile a master list of all Beaverhead county men and women in the service. It plans gifts for those not previously recognized and to send overseas gifts before Friday if possible.
