A quirky wartime column lists social quips and headlines with references to Roose velts Thanksgiving day and Axis threats, noting refugee scenes in New York and cultural nods to film stars. It blends humor with war mood, mentioning Berlin and Rome leaders and a Rich collage of jokes about public life and politics.
Thirty more questionnaires mailed to selective service registrants with order numbers 101 to 130. Two of the first hundred have not yet been returned, risking fines and imprisonment for noncompliance. One hundred five registrants have been classified, 57 in A-1 ready for immediate service if passed by examiners. Sixteen volunteers already inducted seek immediate duty. The list includes Harry E. Anderson, Herman T. Flaherty, Bart a G. Barfield, Charles D. Holloway, Raymond L. Trowlinger, Richard L. Stone, Archie F. Skinner, John E Shefflett, Verne R. Seaton, Joseph G. McVey, James S. Taylor, Terry P. Conklin, Laurence Taylor, and Robert Mercer. Beaverhead County must furnish 57 men by June 30, 1940.
Two distinct parent teacher groups will operate next year after a November meeting vote. At year end separate officer elections will be held. Mrs O T Van Degrift chaired a committee including Mrs M Coppin and others to raise funds for playground equipment for the new city park.
Judge Henry G. Rodgers of Dillon sentenced Harold Goff and Clyde Downey to life imprisonment at hard labor for the murder of George Kilmer on October 12. Goff and Downey pled guilty in Boulder district court and were sentenced immediately. The display also notes Beaverhead county history with a sign about Bill Fair weather, referencing the Plummer gang and Bannack hanging.
Dillon Elks lodge No. 1554 holds annual memorial services next Sunday December 1 at the Bannack street home. Program begins 7 30 p m with an orchestra under L A Gregory followed by opening ceremonies by Exalted Ruler Frank O Keefe and Esquire Dave Williams.
Fourteen Beaverhead county candidates filed expense accounts with a total spend of 541.40. Constable hopefuls John W. Roberts L Peterson and William C Griffith reported no costs while others listed various amounts for state senate clerk of court county commissioner county attorney and other offices including Don E Anson Robert Good Raymond Schwartz and A J Fitzsimmons. Justice of the peace contenders Louis Stahl George Opp and Fred Oliver each spent one dollar.
Miss Gladys Tofte Beaverhead county home demonstration agent will move to Bozeman to headquarter during winter as demonstration agent at large for the state. She will return to Dillon to resume county extension work about the first of April.
Fourteen year old Jack Dodd of 435 South Washington suffered a flesh wound to his right hand when a small calibre automatic pistol discharged at home after a pistol practice at the high school range. The bullet passed through a chair and broke a window. tetanus shots were given as a precaution.
Two offenders faced charges of operating motor vehicles against public safety. Jim Hyndman of Lima and Edward Krause of Dillon pled guilty and paid fines of 100 dollars each. Krause also lost driving privileges for six months after a Dillon collision that hospitalized four of five involved. Harold E. Ford of Armstead received a 5 dollar fine for improper clearance lights on a wide truck.
Dillon Elks lodge No 1554 schedules a John Pershing class on December 7 to honor a leading American. A membership vote is set for December 3. The Drum Corps will sponsor a dance on November 21 at the Home, with plans for a New Year’s Eve dance already in the works.
Helen's Style Shop formerly owned by Wilma Hyssop was bought last week by Mrs. Smith Ames of Dillon. The shop will keep the same name and operate under new ownership. Hyssop left last week to join her husband employed in Canada.
Berniece H Papworth leaves her role as state superintendent of home management to take a federal position in Butte. The move follows her recent appointment to the state post.
Edward W. Exum aged 25 a popular Dillon figure and standout basketball star died Monday afternoon in a Los Angeles hospital from meningitis after a three week illness. Born in Lava Hot Springs Idaho he moved to Dillon in 1931 to live with his sister Mrs H L Tolley and starred for Coach John W Brick Breeden. He later led the Montana State Bobcats to a Rocky Mountain conference title and earned all conference honors in 1937.
The Dillon volunteer fire department will receive a new Emerson resuscitator and inhalator on Tuesday December 3 with a demonstration at the city council meeting. A second demonstration by L N Curtis of Oakland California will be at Barrett hospital next Wednesday. The device aids in electric shock drowning carbon monoxide poisoning asphyxia pneumonia and can be used portable for rural or transport settings. It costs 443 dollars paid from volunteer department funds.
The 1940 Christmas seal campaign opens with a design of two boys and a girl drawn by F. L. Martini for the Exam iner. Shakespeare club Dillon leads the effort with Mrs. T. Lee McCracken as chair. A hundred penny seals go to every Dillon family to fund Montana tests to detect tuberculosis early and prevent spread.
Beaver head county high school basketball drills intensify as 24 players shrink to A and B squads. Eighteen games are tentatively set, with a Christmas vacation alumni game and a December 19 trip to Ennis for the first interscholastic contest. Pre season notes promise speed and grit from newcomers and veterans alike.
Rotary club met Monday evening with Thomas E. Luebben as chairman and Wiley Davis of Bozeman plus Fred Chapman Jr as guests. Chapman spoke from his high school experience about football centering on Beaver and traced its English college origins. He noted modern rules reward brains and football science and predicted a bright future for clever play and field generalship. Frank Tyro, past president, shared a string of entertaining anecdotes regarded as the year’s best.
The C D ranch of the Big Hole basin formerly owned by the Hazelbaker estate was purchased by Matt Browning of Ogden Utah. The 8000 acre property, developed into a top northwest livestock ranch since 1930, now hosts 1200 extra cattle and is managed by foreman Lloyd Thomas.
A group of Dillon skiers gathered at the new Elkhorn Springs course for a weekend house warming. The new tow works well since its completion ten days ago and two extra runs bring total to three. One run features a small jump and another a half mile roundabout stretch. About 15 persons checked in.
Mr and Mrs Dave Williams and Mr and Mrs Roscoe Cornell returned Monday evening from Helena where the men attended a statewide Kiwanis officers institute. The event drew all Montana president elects and many secretaries and vice presidents from 22 organizations and featured Canadian Kiwanian George McCuish discussing the war impact on the Indian people.
