Reports from 19 Montana counties under Commissioner Greenfield date Oct 31 show favorable fall weather has plowed and prepared large areas for spring planting. Winter wheat and rye thrive statewide. threshing largely done with yields above expectations in drought areas.
The influenza outbreak in the county and city is easing. Several deaths occurred this week, new cases rise daily, but the epidemic abates. Quarantine to be lifted tomorrow as Dr. Walker says schools will reopen Monday and the Hartwig Theater will start shows tomorrow night. A Thanksgiving dance is planned at Dillmont Park. Claims include two fatalities in Hogan's Alley, and individual obituaries note Jack Burke, 78, born in Ireland, died Monday. Mrs. O’Brien, tied to Mrs. Kate Fitzharris, dies from influenza. Walter Sloan, 35, dies of pneumonia after helping in a Beardslee ranch fire. a five-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. McIntosh dies of influenza with remains shipped to Salt Lake City.
Edward Mittlemier died Thursday from a lung hemorrhage after a night of coughing. He had lived in Dillon for years, born in Russia, and survived by four brothers and one sister. Funeral services were held Friday at Brundage parlors with burial at Mountain View Cemetery. Monroe Bucy and his father visited Dillon for county business Monday.
Sheridan reports a potato harvest of 700000 bushels with a 25000 bushel surplus. Threshing nears completion as farmers market grain. Yellowstone notes unprecedented fall plowing and seeding, winter wheat in good condition, threshing near finish, and average county yields. Custer praises favorable seeding weather, full elevators, strong stock, and ample feed. Sanders threshermen cite four and a half bushels per acre for wheat with larger fall plantings. Missoula records 8 to 12 bushels per acre and larger fall wheat acreage, with about 70 percent hauled to the elevator.
The county lists 63 taxpayers paying at least one thousand dollars. The Shortline railroad tops the big payer list with 57,507.75 in taxes. Dillon’s First National Bank, Poindexter & Orr, and Adams and others follow with sizable amounts. Property valuations total over ten million, with real estate and improvements valued at 4,804,504 and livestock largely assessed for taxation. Taxes are due by the 30th of the month or face ten percent delinquencies.
Mrs Isabella Orr of Dillon dies in California after heart trouble. She was born December 19 1873 in Dillon and educated there. Survived by husband Ernest Orr two sons Irving and William, parents Abram and Mrs Rife, two brothers Fred and Jardine and sister Mrs Lee Van Etton. Remains to be brought to Dillon for interment. funeral plans to be announced.
Ozias Johns, 69, a long time county resident and former Peoria native, died Monday morning from a heart attack while working at the Cornell ranch. Burial will be in Peoria. Survived by daughter Mrs. Charles Perry of Boulder area.
Manager W. B. Hartwig announces Hartwig theater has been fumigated and renovated and will host its first show in six weeks. The venue remains well ventilated and a Thanksgiving night attraction is planned.
The Theta club, idle for weeks due to the influenza epidemic, will hold a meeting next Tuesday evening at Mrs. W. G. Gilbert's home. Mrs. Mary Pendergast arrived from Southern California and plans to depart soon for the Big Hole basin. Dr Geo G Brownback relocated his osteopath office to the Phillips apartments at 16 tf.
The 1918 Dillon building surge brings a $300,000 slate of new projects. The Normal Dormitory emerges as a fire proof two story foundation in Boise sandstone with 34 sleeping rooms and a $60,000 cost. Lloyd-Blair block adds a two story fire proof garage and apartment spaces. Beaverhead Motors opens a Ford garage with a $20,000 cost and upstairs residences. A new flour mill worth $35,000 stands opposite the elevator. Robert Dansie’s white frame home at $30,000 features mahogany interiors. Frank Swartz builds a $20,000 red brick residence on South Washington. Harry Gimble completes a seven room bungalow on South Pacific Street.
