A Union Pacific maintenance of way group held a county courthouse session last Sunday afternoon with about 35 members and their ladies from Silver Bow Lima Butte Dillon and Dubois Idaho in attendance. Francis T. Brennan of Denver presided and spoke. Walter G. Long of Pocatello also addressed the meeting during the brotherhood gathering and an auxiliary meeting was held for the ladies.
Carl A. Nyman of Missoula Montana district deputy of Montana B P K E paid his official visit to lodge No 1554 with large attendance. A prior dinner at Wilbur cafe featured local lodge officers. Nyman urged full participation in the National Defense program during the meeting and the initiation was demonstrated. A winter dance is set for Saturday evening November 29 by the Dillon Elks lodge announced by Exalted Ruler Homer.
Norris Tait of Melrose received 30 days in jail and a 500 dollar fine for a Montana game law violation in Virginia City. He pleaded not guilty, posted 1,000 bail, and his case proceeds to district court. Wardens investigated a complaint of four elk killed near Melrose last September, with carcasses not quartered or meat touched, linked to releases by the Rocky Mountain Sportsmen's Association.
E R Hilger of the Dillon Creamery told Rotarians last Wednesday that dairy products are vital to national defense and aid-to-Britain efforts. He noted milk vitamins A B1 and G support health and cited dairy’s 3.5 billion dollar contribution to U S farm income. Dairy exports to Britain include cheese dried milk and canned milk while butter shipments face refrigeration limits. Hilger chairs the Rotary club vocational committee.
Paul Holloran, 12, son of Mr and Mrs L M Holloran, was knocked from his bicycle at the Sebree and Atlantic streets intersection when a car driven by Miss Lorra ine Pierce north on Atlantic turned west on Sebree. Witnesses said the car was moving slowly and did not see him. the boy sustained minor injuries. Chief Patrick urged bicycle riders to observe traffic rules and to use lights after dusk for safety.
Fifteen below was the minimum temperature recorded in last week’s cold wave at the Normal College weather station. Saturday’s reading rose slightly and Sunday saw a high of 28 above. The end of the cold spell brought relief to residents and some ice seekers at the new municipal rink.
The Normal college Bulldogs schedule a 10 day tour through Idaho Oregon and Washington to start the season under Coach William Straugh. Opening game in Dillon is set for December 3 against Northwest Welders of Butte with further dates including Great Falls College of Education Rexburg Ricks College Northwest Nazarene College College of Idaho East Oregon College of Education Whitman College of Puget Sound and Whitman College in various venues.
Landowners hiring professional trappers must notify the district deputy game warden or the state game warden in Helena 10 days before trapping, providing the trapper’s name, address, and operation dates. The rule aims to give the fish and game department time to supervise trapping. The commission also announced the second elk hunting season’s firing line in Park county will close December 16 to January 31. Decker Flats is nicknamed the firing line for how elk are slaughtered like cattle when snow is deep and hunters form a skirmish line.
The Dillon volunteer fire department hosts a Thanksgiving eve dance at city hall with music by the Jimmy Fay Orchestra. Mrs Ida E Best mother of Assessor Jud P Best suffered a hip fracture Sunday night after a fall on Glendale street in front of a Texaco station. She was taken to Barrett hospital and later moved to her apartment with witnesses Don Nelson and J W Walters assisting before transfer.
Dillon faces a new skating rink issue as Street Commissioner Elza Patrick seeks a northern end facility. After consulting the Hiz'zoner and parks committee, he identifies a vacant half block by the courthouse on Bannack street between Pacific and Washington with hydrant, lights, and map access.
Advanced instructor course in water safety and first aid set for March 23 to April 4 under Beaverhead Red Cross. Harold Snow chairs local first aid. Miss Marjorie Hamer and Miss Florence Hellman lead the standard courses with about 45 in first aid and 15–20 aiming for water safety cert.
A Kiwanis round-table on the political and economic aspects of labor in the United States was held at the guild hall last Wednesday evening. Pres. Roscoe Cornell chaired. two new members Chet Jackson of Beaverhead National Forest and Paul Puyear of Montana Auto Sales were initiated. Ladies of the St. James guild served dinner.
Federal Judge James H. Baldwin ordered enlargement of the Red Rock Migratory Waterfowl refuge by condemning 3562.41 acres in Centennial Valley. Landowners S. M. Jasper Mamie Buck and Clarence E. Hunt received $51,609.25 total. Possession by December 1 with removal of hay by July 1, 1942.
Dillon five man team scored 210 to 198 in a dinner match against Jackson sharpshooters after a 12 point win. Hank Hignight led with 44 points, followed by Wesbergard 43, Mel Jones 42, Herman Peterson 41, and Vic Westergard 40. challengers stacked 44,44,41,35,34.
