Open House at Beaver City High will take place Tuesday November 20 postponed from yesterday by Principal Bill Bruer. The event during National Education Week includes a Beaver band concert and tours of all rooms plus the new Vocational Agriculture shop. Parents and patrons may meet teachers. FHA girls serve coffee and cookies. If successful the event may become annual.
County 4-H clubs held an all day program at the high school recreation center on Nov 10 flagged by morning and afternoon sessions. Highlights included presentations of county awards, a pot luck lunch, and later reports from delegates to state Congress and camp meetings. Blue award winners included Carolee Kambich Verna Jenkins Carla Jensen and Carla Andrus among others with awards for beautification and boys agriculture.
Beaverhead county voters turnout was 86.8 percent with 3026 ballots cast of 3491 registered. The official tally shows the 3 mill road levy passing 1074 to 1025 with a 49 vote margin and 260 absent ballots issued.
Dillon clubs and civic groups pledge service hours to operate the Ground Observation Corps lookout station on a round the clock basis. County GOC director Ed Swetish says volunteers are needed to reduce individual time. High school juniors through adults of all ages may serve. Jaycees Parent Teachers Association and Soroptimist club members are already serving. The Air Force installed an electronic car in the tower at City Hall to aid plane spotting.
A Monday Veterans Day ceremony at the high school auditorium drew several hundred attendees. The 50 piece band and Girls Chorus performed, color guard presented colors, and Chaplain Luther S. Smith delivered the opening prayer. Attorney Don J. Smith gave the Eleventh Hour Reflections on freedom and democracy as motivating forces in U S wars. Mrs. Robert Wright spoke on Americanism, defining it as a living force tied to duties of citizens and teachers of youth. User.
A herder on Sage Creek hilltop at the Rock Island Company ranch reported two steers shot and killed from a car window. Sheriff John MacDonald said the wan ton killing occurred about a week ago and is under investigation. He seeks tips from anyone in the area on November 4.
J. M. Sprange of Carter Oil Company denounces the Montana Trade Commission’s preliminary report on gasoline pricing as misleading. He cites testimony from a Helena hearing showing higher refining and distribution costs in Montana and argues state taxes and dealer margins explain much of the higher prices.
The Presbyterian Methodist Baptist and Assembly of God churches join for a Thanksgiving Day service at 10:00 in the First Baptist church. The public is invited to attend and give thanks unto God.
Beaverhead County Farm Bureau calls a county-wide meeting for Friday evening November 16 at 8 00 p m in the 4 H club building county fair grounds. A Riverside unit session precedes the meeting with state convention recommendations reviewed and amendments due by November 20 to the state office.
The week saw no precipitation with daily highs from 50 to 66 degrees and lows of 25 to 33. Morning low 1 degree noted in the record. Readings at Western Montana College station list November 7 to 13 with an average weekly high around 57 and no total precipitation recorded.
