Beaverhead county reports over 3500 dollars in the United War Work drive with solicitors meeting daily at the Andrus hotel in Dillon. County precinct captains report progress to Pearl I. Smith as efforts continue despite poor roads and illness.
A parade of locals and guests traversed Dillon with visits from Butte Reichle Armstead and Melrose. Notables include Ed Roe Bedrock, James McKnight Dell Teresa Refichle Reichle and Miss Leone Carter Helena. Henry Bighorn killed in France October 24. Sheriff Wyman and George Fisher among those noted in week’s movements.
L R Foote assistant state superintendent visited Dillon and announced the state teachers association meeting has been indefinitely adjourned. It was set for Thanksgiving week but school closures due to influenza forced postponement. A D Peterson is recovering from influenza at the county hospital.
The county commission canvassed Beaverhead election returns showing no changes. O. M. Best won a commissioner majority by 44 over Stimpson, Finsley defeated Patterson for representative by 57 votes. Mortgages tax exemption amendment passed 831 to 456. State bonds for terminal elevators approved 684 to 622. Chiropractor licensing initiative No. 12 passed 704 to 626. Multiple local officials elected across Dillon and surrounding areas.
English buyers will hold a horse inspection next Saturday under the Dillon Horse Sales company at their new yards south of the stockyards. They will pay $200 for every horse accepted, with details available in today’s advertisement.
William Peters a 60 year old sheepherder in Sweetwater died from exposure after losing his way in last week’s storm. His body was found last Thursday. He was a well known figure in the area.
Francis Forsgren and Willie Nelson returned from a two week country visit. Mrs F T Birrer and her son drove from their Blaine ranch home last Friday. Mrs Dilphine Ayotte visits her daughter at Mc Hesser creek for a week. The F C Swartz family move into a new home on Washington street. Vincent Heavey spends a week at Tom Flynn ranch. Walter Vance is ill in Magnus hospital. Mrs Tom Yost returns from a week at Pocatello and Idaho Falls. Mrs Charles Bennington visits in Dillon from Melrose.
A large crowd gathered outside the courthouse for a postwar victory event held under quarantine. A mock execution of the Kaiser was conducted by a firing squad after a brief sermon by Rev. H. G. Humphrey, with celebrants ringing bells, raising the flag, and fireworks causing damage to courthouse windows.
Frank Hazelbaker installed new public thermometers including one on the Montana Auto garage. Two young onlookers misinterpret the device guessing it indicates gasoline in cars with one boy joking it shows 78 gallons were pumped for the previous car.
Private Geo. F. P. Anderson, 22, known as Frank Anderson, died of bronchial pneumonia according to war department advices received by his parents Mr and Mrs John Anderson of Fish Trap Anaconda. It is believed he passed away in England or France after registering for selective service last June and moving from his ranch to Camp Lewis. He left for Camp Lewis June 27 trained there then sent overseas and he anticipated serving in France soon. He was brother to Mrs Gus Grape of Butte Mrs Lars Peterson of Wisdom Miss Minnie Anderson of Fish Trap and Andrew Jack Fred Russell and James Anderson of the Big Hole basin.
Oliver Ruffner died in Detroit Michigan after a prolonged illness from tuberculosis. He had left Helena for Wisconsin but fell ill with influenza en route and could not continue home. He had resided in Wisdom and was elected county surveyor two years ago before resigning to join the state highway commission.
Beaverhead county youth Lieutenant Bruce Risley, in service since September 1917, travels from Fort Hancock Augusta Ga to Camp Lewis to be stationed for an extended period. Risley earned his commission earlier at Fort Hancock in the machine gun training camp.
Chief of Police Nelson last Saturday picked up a young man who could not produce a registration card. The man gave his name as James Murphy and said he was 23 years old.
The Spanish influenza remains severe in Beaverhead county with new cases but few deaths in Dillon though rural areas report widespread illness. Notable deaths include Ronald McIntosh in Dillon and Frank Lackey in Dillon, with several others in Monida Lima Jackson and Jackson.
London reports British casualty figures for 1918 March 21 to October 24. United Kingdom divisions show officers 118 percent and other ranks 121 percent of strength. Canadian divisions officers 97 percent other ranks 84 percent. Australian divisions officers 93 percent other ranks 95 percent. UK horse and field artillery accounted for 85.88 percent of total strength and 86.37 percent of casualties. Days out of the line averaged 89 for UK divisions, 79 for Australian, and 102 for Canadian.
