Washington readers are told the federal push to build and operate Hells Canyon dam on the Snake River faces strong private enterprise opposition. The proposal would cost about 400 million dollars and is described as a national move toward socialized power, with a Senate bill pending.

Beaverhead Post of the American Legion sponsors Memorial Eve services at Mountain View cemetery Legion plot tonight at 7. Rev. Legion committee decorates all veterans graves with flags. Vice Commander Frank Davis chairs the committee.
The Buddy Poppy Day observance is planned for Saturday June 1 under Lloyd Whipple Post Veterans of Foreign Wars. Disabled veterans in VA homes will make poppies for sale downtown to raise funds for veteran rehabilitation services and support the VFW national home at Eaton Rapids Michigan. Proceeds aid widows and orphans and the living veterans.
Ninety one candidates will receive diplomas and degrees at WMCE on Monday June 3 in the college auditorium at 10 a.m. Russell B Hart of Billings delivers the keynote Citizens Committee for Education address. The program includes an organ recital by Ralph McFadden, choral selections, and processional and recessional music. Baccalaureate services are set for Sunday June 2 at 7 30 p m with Dr H L Steele presiding and Rev E W Andrews delivering the address Conformity is Death.
Elizabeth Orr, junior at Western Montana College and secretary of Montana National Student Education Association, will travel in June to Washington D C for the third annual NEA work conference and the twelfth annual Teacher Education and Professional Standards Commission conference. She will join a Montana delegation including David McGuiger of Great Falls College of Education, with expenses covered by NEA and MEA grants.
Eighth graders received Legion Auxiliary essay and DAR History awards during graduation at the high school auditorium. Fifty six diplomas were issued to Dillon graduates and county rural students as relatives watched. Legion awards were given to Donald Smith Carol Dyer and Paul Bramsman Jr. DAR History trophies went to Gay Townsend Paul Bramsman Jr. and Wilbur Gilbert III.
A timed Big Hole River race for canoes rowboats and rubber boats will run Sunday at 2 p m from Melrose bridge to Glen camp grounds. Paul Schwab chairs entries with $2 per craft. boats are divided into three groups and subject to safety checks with prizes totaling 50 30 and 20 percent.
The Montana State Highway commission awarded the Dillon street paving contract to Kiely Construction Co., Butte, for 330672 dollars. The 1.36 mile project includes grading gravelling plant-mix oiling and drainage with a 160 day completion window. Mayor P J Lovell attended the letting and noted five bids.
Carla Jensen graduated May 22 from Beaverhead County High School and won one of three $100 Montana State Rural Electric Cooperative Association scholarships. Presented by H W Wheat, the award honors scholastic record leadership and youth program involvement including Vigilante Youth Electric.
J. S. Brenner of Grant was reelected president of the Montana Stockgrowers Assn at the 73rd annual convention. New officers include Gene Etchart of Glasgow as first vice president and Wayne Bratten of Winnett as second vice president. Alex Christie of Grant and Alvin Ellis of Red Lodge joined the executive committee. The group endorsed stricter cattle theft penalties, debated land transfers, urged public lands consolidation, wildlife research, and humane livestock practices, and supported continued tax study and brucellosis certification reforms.
At the graduation ceremonies the following seniors were honored with scholarships and awards. Boone Sparrow received a Princeton University scholarship while Harold Contway earned a Western Montana College of Education scholarship. Diana Squires and Marsha Peterson also won University of Montana and Montana State College scholarships respectively.
Five members of the Western Montana College of Education teaching staff will leave their positions this year including Ruth Dillavoy who retires and will teach part time at Gonzaga University. Lawrence Walker resigns to become Dillon’s full time superintendent. Leslie Lawrence moves to Montana State College Bozeman. Walter McGuire leaves to become librarian at Arizona State College Tempe. Ruth Greenfield resigns from physical education staff.

The park commission met Tuesday night to discuss a summer recreation program at City Park. Chair Stewart Burwell led the session and pledged park use for all visitors including tourists. A resolution honored former chairman George Brown who helped develop the facilities before resigning to join Western Montana College. Cub Scout Pack 60 sent a thank you letter for a recent park picnic, and high school Youth Activities representatives attended.
