Beaverhead County Board convened to designate a new alignment for Dillon Twin Bridges Road. Members discussed route location, funding, and impact on local drainage and property access. The measure seeks official designation and related statutory approvals.
Beaverhead county Montana held a regular session May 3 1936 with Commissioners Rife Jackson and Hartwig plus Clerk Baker. Sheriff McCollum granted 60 day leave. Board approved a 61.80 fencing payment for a right of way easement on the poor farm segment. Resolution backed Dillon Twin Bridges road as a feeder highway project continuing on page 4.
The Wisdom Women's club presented The Count of Unaware in Wisdom on Saturday. Cast members included Mesdames Wallace Francis Raymond Johnson Warren Lowery Elmer Jensen and others with directed by Mrs Jake Neidt Jr Exhibiting notable moments were a dance by Mrs Neidt and Warren Lowery in Spanish costume and a charming chorus performance.
Joecu Dillon’s new post office is set for occupancy in early June with June 8 as the tentative first day residents can call for mail at the new building. Equipment is being installed and interior decoration nears completion as Postmaster Harry J. Andrus aims to move supplies and files from the old site over the weekend before opening. There will be no formal opening.
Barry Caskin 26 of Dillon died at Barrett hospital after a weeklong illness. Born in Brushton New York in 1910 he moved to Dillon with his parents 16 years ago and lived here since. Survived by his mother and brother Gerald. father Frank J. Caskin died a year ago. Funeral Friday at 10 in St Rose Catholic Church with Rev F X Lechner and burial in Mountain View cemetery.
The Beaverhead county race shows quiet filing activity with Paul Temple becoming the first candidate to file for the Republican nomination for sheriff. Temple, a 20 year county resident, has served as deputy sheriff and as a water commissioner on local streams.
A U S public health service branch laboratory opens in Dillon at H. H. Hanson place near Norman college to study bubonic plague affecting Beaverhead county gophers. Directors William Ellison and Gordon Hayward will lead, aided by County Agent Bernard Williams as they inspect the Big Hole basin and collect gopher specimens.
A Texas firm begins construction of a white stucco super service station at the Washington and Glendale corner. The modern facility aims to be among the citys most attractive of its kind with up to date equipment and conveniences.
Paul Sterling pleaded guilty to burglary and was sentenced by Judge Lyman H. Bennett to two years in state prison after arraignment on a grand larceny charge. He was arrested Saturday for allegedly burglarizing a Railroad avenue residence. cash and valuables were recovered and he began serving the term in Deer Lodge.
The Legion Auxiliary reports nearly 8000 poppies sold at the annual Poppy Day sale led by Seana and volunteers including schoolchildren. The event, under the auxiliary's auspices, surpassed last year's distribution of 500 poppies.
A new Safety Club for bicyclists formed at Dillon city hall under Bea verhead post of the American Legion. Legion committee led by T Lee McCracken organized the meeting with talks by Mayor D A Galt and Police Chief Charles Nelson endorsing safety rules from the Safe Bike Riders Code. A second meeting at the city hall tomorrow will elect officers and finalize the organization with the Legion Advising.
Five students earned four points each to top Beaverhead County High School’s honor roll for the second semester. Valedictorian Jane Waldorf, recent graduate of the class of 1936, is among the five top honorees. The other four are Howard Morse Floyd Pahnish William Tait and Myla Tovey.
John H. Keenan of Dillon was named president of the county board overseeing the agricultural conservation program in Beaverhead. Joseph C. Ferguson of Reichle elected vice president with Floyd Kentson of Dell as third member and Jens Bay of Riverside as alternate. County Agent Bernard Williams chosen secretary.
The Dillon Elks lodge marks its founding anniversary with a Friday night dance at Dillon Park. An Elks orchestra will provide music and the event is for Elks and their ladies, with attendance by members of nearby lodges. Admission is by paid-up membership cards and the hall will be decoratively set.
The Beaverhead County High School term closed last Friday as 69 seniors received diplomas from P I Smith. Jane Waldorf gave the valedictory and George Kennedy the salutatory. Lew Brundage received the alumni cup and Waldorf the scholarship cup as the ceremony featured orchestra selections and a vocal solo.
Armstead rancher Joe Metlen was elected president of the Montana Stockgrowers Association at the Billings convention, with Tom A. Ross named first vice president and John Arnold second vice president. B A Philips will continue as secretary. The session adopted over twenty resolutions including protests against loosening sanitary restrictions on livestock and livestock products imports.
Normal College baseball won the state collegiate conference title in Billings last week with a 7-6 victory over Northern Montana of Havre and an 11-4 win against Eastern Normal of Billings. The Bulldog track team tied for fourth with the School of Mines.
Ranchers in Beaverhead Montana begin annual sheep shearing with crews moving into Dillon area. Scale set at 11 cents for shearers, up slightly in places. Labor ample as workers arrive from Idaho. 1936 clip expected near or above last year.
Rosa Lee Brown and others were initiated into the W A A at Normal College with Grace Barney presiding. Officers to be elected next meeting, as Mephistopheles Dance and Luxembourg Gardens sketches featured in the spring awards assembly including Ruth Faucett and Barbara Lehwalder.
Beaverhead county taxpayers face a Friday deadline to pay the second half of their taxes. County Treasurer Norah Connelley warned that the payment cutoff is approaching due to the holiday. She noted payments have been relatively slow this month.
Beaverheard County farmers in the agricultural conservation program will receive a per acre rate for diverting 16 percent of soil depleting acreage to soil conserving crops and for soil building practices if totals meet standards. Deductions apply if the 16 percent minimum is not met or if self-depleting crops exceed base acreages. No planting limits exist, but under-planting conserving crops or over-planting depleting crops reduces payments.
Pupils of the Claudia Faust School of Dancing present their annual revue at the training school auditorium on Monday night June 8. About 85 dancers perform with assisting musicians and vocalists. Don Julian and His Band provide accompaniment and a special intermission set. The program features canary cage ballet rope taps novelty acrobatics and chorus numbers with unusually beautiful costumes. No admission charged seats reserved for relatives.
Memorial day weekend is expected to draw a large exodus as residents plan fishing trips and outings. Locally, Memorial Day rites will be held at the cemetery by the American Legion while fraternal groups visit graves. many Dillon residents may travel to West Yellowstone for activities hosted by the Idaho Falls Elks lodge.
Mr and Mrs Frank Pendleton of Wisdom visited Dillon during the first of the week traveling visitors to the area and staying for a short time in town.
The Eleventh District Dental Association held its annual meeting at Canyon Resort south of Dillon on Saturday night. Dentists from Deer Lodge Powell Granite Madison Beaverhead and Butte attended. Dr Philip Thompson of Anaconda, district president, presided at the meeting followed by a dancing party and refreshments.
Norman C Downing has been appointed a water commissioner on the Smith Rebich ditch south of Dillon, with duties to oversee water flow, irrigation, and ditch maintenance in the area.
