Cabin in the Cotton queen crowned at May Fete

Margery Fisher of Great Falls was crowned queen of the Montana State Normal College May Fete held in the gym. Four attendants included Janet Aldrich Erma Cusker Alice Matson and Ruth Phelps. The event, directed by Marjorie Hamer, drew over 300 students and attendees to a capacity crowd.

William Ashworth Dies of Heart Attack in Bannack

William R. Ashworth a prominent mining man from Bannack Montana died Sunday evening from a heart attack. Born February 13 1862 in New Diggins Wisconsin he moved to Montana as a young man and lived in Bannack thereafter. He is survived by a sister Mrs Martha Thompson of Dillon and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at Brundage Funeral Home with Rev J A Meeke officiating and burial in Bannack Cemetery.

Retired Pastor Rev. Hooker Leads Last St James Sermon

Reverend D. Hooker who served 35 years at St. James Church preached the morning service last Sunday in the city church marking the end of his long tenure.

Memorial Day Observed By Beaverhead Legion Post

Beaverhead post of the American Legion will sponsor the only community Memorial Day observance next Wednesday. Veterans meet at Brundage funeral home at 9 to proceed to Mountain View cemetery for rites at 9 30, then decorate departed ex service men graves. Walter Stamm chairs the service committee.

Dillon Swimming Stars Do Well In Gregson Meet

Dillon swimmers finished second at the Gregson Springs Boy Scout aquatic meet. Roy Forrester led with wins in 20, 40 and 100 yard free events and a second in backstroke. John Combes, Jack Selway and Billy Bayerd also posted notable results as Dear Lodge took first place.

Junior High Graduation Set for Tomorrow

Fifty one junior high graduates will receive diplomas tomorrow afternoon at the annual commencement in the training school auditorium. Five honor roll students Frances Pickelick Leland Nyhart Dorothy Simpson Earl Fairbanks Jr and Franklin Bayerd will give talks instead of a speaker. The program includes the training school orchestra under L A Gregory selections by the boys glee club a trombone solo by Donald Wheat with Gladys Burteh as accompanist and an invocation.

Dillon Gun Club wins Montana Standard postal trapshoot title

The Dillon Gun Club capped an undefeated season with a 76 perfect score to claim the state title for the third straight year and gain permanent possession of the cup. Pete Westergaard and W. E. Tallent each shot 26s, while Ted Renfro led the field in Butte's registered shoot.

Decrease in Filings for County Race

Only two candidates filed petitions for nomination this week with Clerk Albert Baker for county office and justice of the peace in Dillon township. Alex Crosby, a well known Dillon resident, entered the race for sheriff as a Republican, adding to the crowded field of candidates. Crosby previously ran for sheriff two years ago and has broad support across the county. He also has prior service as a special deputy in the Big Hole basin and Bannack, and has spent the past year in sales.

Dillon Nine Downs Biased by Normal Club

The Dillon Independents were defeated 13 to 0 by Normal’s “M” club at the fairgrounds Sunday, sealing the city series. Shy Callahan pitched well with three hits allowed and 11 strikeouts as Van Degrift and Ward yielded 16 hits. eight errors and 12 stolen bases aided the rout. The American Legion junior team will be chosen soon from four squads. A Dillmont park fundraiser Saturday night seeks funds for new outfits.

Farmers Firefighters to Sponsor Dance in Dillon Park

Dillon volunteer fire department and Beaverhead valley ranchers announce a carnival and dance at Dillmont park on Saturday night June 9. Proceeds fund a rural fire truck to reduce fire hazard on local ranches. Both firemen and ranchers will sell tickets.

Joe Metlen to Speak at Montana Stockgrowers Meeting

Beaverhead county stockmen plan large turnout for the 50th annual Montana Stockgrowers' convention in Miles City starting tomorrow and running through Saturday. State Rep B J Metlen will headline Friday afternoon with an address on State Lands and the Public Domain. A Pullman car from Butte has been arranged for arrival in Miles City.

Beaverhead county distributes government supplied poison bran for grasshopper control. Ranchers may apply at Dillon or Lima offices with Clerk Albert 8 Baker and county campaign supervisor Bernard R Williams, or commissioners Hartwig or Tom Dubois. Public Works Reviews Montana Normal College Dorm Loan

The Public Works Administration considers a 181,500 loan for reconstructing and repairing Montana State Normal college residence halls. Supplemental data were filed May 16 and reviewed by the public works board. approval before the end of the session is hoped.

Thomas Luebben Chosen Head of Dillon Rotary Club

Thomas H. Luebben was elected president of the Dillon Rotary club by the board of directors at Monday night’s dinner. Secretary Thomas E. Gilbert was re elected for his ninth term. Dr. Walter H. Stephan becomes vice president. Lambert Elfel chaired the meeting as Willard Albright performed a Kreisler violin piece with Ralph McFadden on piano. Prof. Robert E. Albright reviewed Montana conditions in his weekly talk.

Commencement set for tomorrow at Close High School

The Close High School graduation will be held tomorrow night with sixty seniors receiving diplomas. Local officials expect a large crowd for the ceremony at the school auditorium.

Dance Revue Set by Claudia Faust School of Dancing

Pupils of the Claudia Faust School of Dancing present their fourth annual revue at the training school auditorium on Wednesday evening June 6. The program features varied dancing and vocal numbers plus selections by the Canyon dance orchestra. New novelty dances debut on the Dillon stage including a toe-tap roller skate act and chair acrobatics. The show includes group and solo numbers in two parts with an enchanted chair theme in the second half. Admission is free.

State divides football districts into two elimination zones

Montana will group its 17 large high schools into two elimination districts for football next season. The southern district includes Beaverhead County High School along with Butte Central Anaconda Bozeman Billings Miles City Livingston Roundup and Glendive. The northern zone covers Butte High Helena Missoula Great Falls Harré Lewistown Kalispell and others.

Beaverhead Pupil Wins District Declamation Meet

Charles Schleicher of Apex school won the district flag declamation contest in Butte under the American Legion auxiliary. He will represent the southern Montana district at the state meet in Helena soon.
