Stock meet sale highlights Beaverhead event in Dillon

A stock growers meeting in Dillon features a 4-H calf sale at the livestock pavilion after the baby beef show with Col Luther Smith auctioneering. The grand champion and several class champions are to be sold to local butchers as part of the program. The annual meeting and federation convention follow with talks by Montana leaders and educators.

Legion to Hold Rites at Mountain View Cemetery

Beaverhead post of the American Legion announces memorial services next Wednesday evening May 29 at the Legion plot in Mountain View cemetery. Geo M Gosman will deliver the principal address and the Beaverhead county high school band will play. A public address system will be used and post members will decorate veterans' graves.

Kiwanis Dillon Hear Talks as Members Share Biographies

Six Dillon Kiwanis members spoke at the weekly dinner, with biographies from Oliver Hyssop, Glen Meyers, Jack Gavin, Harold Wheelbarger, Dr. F. H. Bimrose and Carl Olson. Dr. H A Stanchfield reported on the underprivileged children committee. Guests J E Kelly of Dillon and G C White of Helena attended. Carlill received a four year state prison sentence after pleading guilty to forgery in district court and was moved to Deer Lodge. Sheriff Paul Temple arrested him.

WPA Dinner Draws Large Attendance in Dillon

Workers and sponsors of the WPA divisions observed nation al This Works Pays Your Community week in Dillon with a Monday night dinner at the Baptist cottage attended by about 50 people. Local firms and individuals donated the meal as talks from WPA officials in Washington accompanied remarks by local workers and sponsors. A program of entertainment followed.

Season opens with fair fishing reported

Anglers noted the season opening after a two months’ closed period. Big county streams ran low and fairly clear with several good catches reported.

Dillon Gun Club Fourth In Telegraphic Tourney

Dillon Gun Club finished fourth in the Montana Standard telegraphic trapshooting tourney as final matches concluded. Jud Brundage and Ross Emerick posted 74s here and in Sheridan with 24s from Barrett and Jones at Sheridan and Barrett Free and Smith here. Dillon’s 74 edged Bozeman 73 but Could not topple Butte Trap and Skeet at 75. Havre tied if it defeats Sheridan in a Bil ling shoot-off at the state tourney in two months.

Diploma Day For Fifty Beaverhead Seniors At I. Auditorium

Fifty Beaverhead county high school seniors will receive diplomas at the annual commencement in the auditorium tomorrow night at 8. Montana State Normal College President Sheldon E. Davis will deliver the address When Tomorrow Comes. Fr M Barrett will present diplomas after Principal C O Orr introduces the candidates. The program features the high school orchestra under L A Gregory with Ralph McFadden guest director, a mixed vocal number, a girls sextet under Miss Castles, and the valedictory, salutatory, invocation and benediction by Rev W G Lewis of St James Episcopal church.

Dillon Elks Celebrate 11th Anniversary with Dance

Dillon lodge Nb. 1554 Elks held an 11th anniversary party at the Elks home with over 60 Butte Elks members and ladies attending. The Butte and Dillon drum and bugle corps led a parade through the business district and performed an exhibition, drawing high praise. The Dillon lodge was instituted by the Butte lodge on May 18, 1929, and many visitors attended the event.

Beaverhead county high school students elected Dale Stinson president of the Student Association and of the B club for the 1940 41 term. Other officers include Stanley Bradley vice president Ethel Mary Forrester secretary Frank Kurtz treasurer Harold Cantrell business manager Clyde Casterline yell leader and Betty Blythe Stephan assistant leader. Girls' club picks Dorothy Ann Gosman president with Annabelle George as vice president and Alice Davis Ethel Mary Forrester treasurer June Johnson Irma Jackson and Betty Barry class representatives. Republicans named an uninstructed delegation to the national convention and party conventions in Helena drew delegates from Beaverhead County.

Beaverhead high marks first senior annual in 19 years

The Beaverhead county high school distributed its first annual in 19 years titled The Beaver of 1940. It showcases pictures and stories of every club plus senior baby photos, a class history and prophecy, athletics records, a senior play feature, and a Beaver March dedication. Sponsors Fay Kirkpatrick Jean Ballard Evelyn Rimel supported by editor Jo Ann Deputy and staff.

Public Park Drive Extended to Raise More Funds

The Dillon park committee plans a further drive through next Saturday to raise an additional thousand dollars for a public park and playground. C. A. Bechler, elected chair, follows Alvin M. Jones. The first phase raised over a thousand dollars and sponsors hope for a full amount to buy 20 acres for the site.

Dillon Legionnaires Lead Helena Mining District Meet

A large Dillon delegation attended the American Legion and auxiliary district convention in Helena. Guy D. Combes was named district vice commander and Charles Lemmen district commander. Auxiliary district president is Mrs. Harold M. Warner with Mrs. Pat Whelan of Butte as district auxiliary president. National president Mrs. William H. Corwith of Rockville Center spoke on The Legion and Auxiliary Program in a radio address.

Public Park Project Discussed At Dillon Rotary

Dillon's public park and playground project was the topic at a Dillon Rotary dinner. Prin Conrad O Orr explained the plan and possible issues. A campaign to raise 2000 dollars has been continued until Saturday with 1000 dollars already raised. The club voted to hold a Rotary picnic soon. Albert Erickson chaired the meeting and E J Beckett of Missoula attended as a guest.

Boy Scout Court Of Honor At Headquarters

A Boy Scout court of honor will be held tonight at 8 o clock in the Scout headquarters at the Andrus hotel. Merit badges will be awarded to John Bowring Dan Boka Dale Dart Jack Davis Robert McGinnis Bob Stanchfield Billie Curry Dee Smith with tenderfoot badges to Craig Olson Earl Smith and the two McLaren boys. The public is invited to attend.
