Fire Insurance Lags As Property Values Rise on Farms

Increased farm property values leave most farm buildings underinsured. A barn once $3 000 before the war would be $6 000 now and should be insured for $6 000. Insurance often covers only a fraction of replacement cost when a building is destroyed. Insure at replacement cost, not original cost, and adjust coverage as prices rise. Emphasize fire prevention with fire resistant materials and roof protection to reduce risk. Eliminate outdoor hazards and debris, remove weeds, and curb field sparks that can reach buildings.

Montana employers receive tax relief under experience rating law

Montana employers cut about 3.75 million dollars from payroll taxes over two years under the 1947 experience rating law. Barclay Craighead says 1947 yielded 1.75 million and 1948 two million in tax relief on large payrolls, with taxable revenue would have reached about 5.8 million without the program. The Legislature left the law intact as it enters its third year. Montana zinc output rose in January and 1948 annual zinc production reached 54 275 short tons, the highest since 1941, with increases also seen in nearby states. Montana unemployment benefits in February were the highest in seven years per Craighead.
