Union Pacific seeks to discontinue daytime Butte line
The Union Pacific railroad company asked for authority to drop daytime trains 33 and 34 between Butte and the Montana Idaho border. A public hearing in Butte drew protest from Maiden Rock dairy rancher Fred E. Pilling who ships 20 gallons of milk daily to Dillon and warned abandonment would harm his business. Written protests came from unions, local residents, and several businesses. Railway witnesses argued adequate service would remain via other transport. The board of railroad commissioners took the matter under advisement after concluding the service may not justify operating costs.
