Dillon Elks drum and bugle corps presents two nights of games door prizes and a grand prize at Dart's Hall April 1 and 2 as part of the On to Anaconda campaign. Elks and invited guests only. paid-up cards and invitations required.
Dillon Girl Scout council members launched a fund drive with a goal of 300 dollars. The finance committee led by Mrs. Frank Tyre canvasses the city soliciting business support for next year’s activities and expenses including registration fees, charter, troop costs, leaders training, camp, transportation and conferences. Over 140 badges were awarded at a recent court of awards.
A conference on proposed roads and improvements was held at the Chamber of Commerce offices with Big Hole basin and Dillon residents. Attendees included Mrs. Mary Shaw, Don Anson, Warren Shaw, Harry Helming and transportation committee members led by O A Bergeson. projects named were Twin Bridges Dillon road, Divide Wisdom highway, Big Hole route via Grasshopper valley and Jackson, and Armstead to Legdore Idaho. All pledged continued efforts to promote these developments.
Beaverhead county high school students present their annual operetta Hollywood Bound in the school gym next Tuesday night April 5. The cast includes Bob Kent Don Wheat Marcia Norton Marguerite Johnson Windy Bryan Clyde Casterline Jo Ann Fuller Clyde Chalmers Howard Morse Annette June Johnson Don Smith Agatha Wigglesworth Ruth Deputy Eric Von Whoopanholler Hi De Ho David Rife Arthur Christensen Alys Adore June Patrick Tim Molloy Bruce Brundage Willie Fred Rife Mr Feilebaum William Tower Jimmy Albertson Isaac Relic Garfield Pomeroy Phineas Tompkins Frank Bayerd and others.
Lima gun club members joined the Dillon Gun club in a telegraphic shoot at Lima traps. Bill Gleed and Darel Peterson posted perfect 25s contributing to the Dillon score. Clyde Meetham Joe Birrer posted 24x25 with several new shooters reaching solid scores. Walter Fagan and Harry Allen shot well on their first time at the traps.
James W. Mann, Montana State Normal college graduate, published February 1938, writes on school journalism editing. The volume covers organizing staff, reporting, headlines, humor, editorials, sports, feature stories, printing, proofing, financing and advertising with quotations and humorous tone. Mann, an instructor in the 1937 Winnetka Illinois summer school, previously taught and led a Montana school. The article notes an assembly program with music and student award letters, listing pieces and performers.
Patricia Gilbert and Hiram Lapham head the Montana State Normal College winter honor roll with three trade points per credit. Ilene Jackson ranks fourth with 2 8824 grade points, followed by a large group of named Dillon and other city students listed in approximate order.
Last Friday afternoon and evening a vodvil program thrilled students and families at the training school auditorium. Proceeds benefited the grade school boys athletic fund. The high school orchestra conducted by L A Gregory performed five pieces, with the training school orchestra also featured in the matinee. The program included an instrumental trio Ruth Jackson Dorothy Chapman and L A Gregory, a tumbling act, upper grade girls directed by Florence Hellman, costumed southern melodies by upper grade boys led by Mrs Grace Redburn and Ottilie Brauer, dances by Claudia Faust pupils, tap numbers from Ann Feley room taught by Miss Peck and Miss Kearney, and Not Quite Such a Goose a one act play led by Violet Eastman with cast Marguerite Dubie Jack Selway Ethel Mary Forrester John Combes and Eileen Grimes.
Wrangler club holds annual banquet on May 9 announced by Chairman J. P. Best at a Monday meeting held at the high school. Arrangements led by Ernest Luebben Conrad Orr Ruth Jordan Robert Clark and John Collins. Rev J A Meeke spoke on Fascism Nazism and Communism.
Dillon Gun club members posted a perfect 75 in the Idaho state telegraphic shoot. The prior Sunday the blizzard reduced their total to 71 and cost them four of five matches against Idaho Utah Washington and Montana. Dr. E. G. Free and W. E. Tallent led the field with 50 straight, contributing two scores.
Mrs. Marguerite Clair was elected president of the Dillon unit of the American Association of University Women. Evelyn Rimmel became vice president, Frances Huffman secretary, and Helen Decker treasurer. Dr Kathleen McHale will visit Dillon on May 4 with arrangements led by F A Hazelbaker T E Gilbert and Ernest Luebben. Hostesses included Fay Kirkpatrick Mabel Colby Maxine Johnson and Mrs Clair. Jean Bishop spoke on the Zionist Movement.
The women’s glee club and mixed chorus of Montana State Normal College present the spring concert in the college auditorium under Arnold Clair. The glee club has 55 voices and the mixed chorus 30. selections include Allah’s Holiday, Welcome Primrose, Nymphs and Fawns, Let All My Life Be Music, The Light of Dawning, Italian Street Song. The mixed chorus offers Some Like Dogs, My Lord What a Mourning, Heav’n Heav’n. A string ensemble performs La Zingana with Thelma Barger, Jane Fetterman, Herman Schwab, and John Haburchak.
The Montana Mining Association plans its state convention in Dillon on August 5 and 6. Three business sessions are scheduled with drilling and mucking contests offering $100 and $50 prizes, a $25 mucking prize, exhibitions at the depot lawn, and a banquet with a public dance. Visitors will tour Argenta and nearby mines on Saturday afternoon.
Nearly 100 directors and secretary treasurers from sixteen national farm loan associations met in Missoula for a two day round table conference. They represented farmers in 21 western Montana counties and discussed loan programs and cooperative planning.
Major Evan W. Kelly, chief of the regional forestry service based in Missoula, discussed Grass at the Dillon Rotary Club Monday night. He noted Beaverhead County leads Montana in grazing facilities and traced soil development from ancient times. He explained grass starts in spring from stored root food and warned that overgrazing reduces forage and delays growth.
Five veterans who were point-winners in last year’s district meet headline Beaverhead county high school track prospects. Veterans include Earl Fairbanks in dashes, Jack Cashmore and Don Wheat in weights, Alex Tait in pole vault, and Charley Burgess in high hurdles. New tryouts feature Lloyd Whipple, Johnny McGahan, Eddie Wilcox, Joe Roland, and F rank Bayerd. District meet set for April 30 in Dillon with several southwestern Montana schools.
Fifteen men are employed at the Ferdinand mine in Argenta by Hecla Mining under bond and lease. They are drifting north and south, with a 500-foot shaft being considered if developments are satisfactory. The Grasshopper lower dredge uses a drag-line and works the creek to the north. A Bannack misunderstanding is expected to be settled this week. The Shaffer property on French creek has been idle for two weeks due to the dispute.
A Latter Day Saints conference in Butte Sunday drew 11 carloads of Dillon people from southwestern Montana. The Dillon delegation presented a program with vocal numbers by a quartet Avonna Bacon Fern Warner Harriet Bills and Mrs Lavon Evans and a double trio including Harriet Bills Mrs Cleora Olson Ruth McCullum Lola Walters Lavon Evane and Paul.
