Local chapter hosts the D A R convention with plans to launch unemployment relief efforts. The gathering follows an American Legion war on depression meeting held last week and aims to boost job opportunities for residents of Dillon.
Paul Temple leads a civic and fraternal coalition under the American Legion in Dillon to urge local residents into two months of steady work. The campaign sets up a City Hall front lobby headquarters for job matching and lists of needed repairs and improvements.
Miss Olga Carlson of the national Girl Scouts staff leads a course at the Normal college in Dillon this week to train students in Girl Scout work. She notes that college graduates benefit from organizing troops and guiding younger girls, helping both their own development and the girls’ learning of junior citizenship.
A capacity audience at the Dillon training school auditorium reveled in a Dillon Parent-Teachers Association program. Two one act plays Meet the Countess and Cherry Special directed by Violet Eastman drew strong applause with a cast including Catherine Bates Audrey Tovey and Mrs H H Bates.
Auctioneer Luther Smith will handle a sale at the W. R. Ennis ranch near Bond station on Thursday April 7 starting at 1 PM. Items include three work horses a cow calf wagon binder rake gang plow drill walking plow harrow blacksmith outfit four sets of harness a 1929 Pontiac in good condition plus livestock farm equipment household furniture oats and hay.
A county tractor owned by Beaverhead Auto Sales ran amok in a repair shop on Saturday afternoon. The incident left a damaged plate glass window and wrecked garage equipment as workers watched the tractor cause chaos in the shop.
Beaverhead DeMolay chapter represented at the state conclave in Bozeman led by Emer Anderson and John T. Orr. Orr named a governor at the meet. Delegates returned Sunday after a Thursday departure from Dillon with an enjoyable conference. Other attendees included Waldron Boger Robert Bidstrup Tom Brenner and several more.
Funeral services for Clay Roselle a Beaverhead county resident were conducted Saturday at the First Baptist Church Dillon with Rev R O Shannon officiating. Beaverhead post of the American Legion led grave services and burial followed at Mountain View Cemetery. A large turnout from southern Beaverhead County attended.
Silver Bow lodge No. 48 A F and A M members conducted degree work at Dillon lodge No. 16 in the Masonic temple. The event drew Masons from Butte Anaconda Sheridan Twin Bridges Lima and the Big Hole basin. After ceremonies, refreshments were served and a Master Mason degree was conferred on a candidate. The Rose Croix Scottish Rite held its Easter breakfast at the Andrus hotel Sunday.
Delegates from nearly every Montana chapter attend the twenty-ninth annual State convention at the St James guild hall. State regent Mrs Charles B Passmore opens proceedings with business sessions planned and officers elected at tomorrow morning's close. Other attendees include Mrs R C Dillivan, Mrs O C Kistler, Mrs Fred Woodside, and Mrs Arthur Rahn.
William Climer longtime Beaverhead resident died at his Armstead home after a long illness. Survived by his widow, brother Hugh, sister Mrs J J Blalock of Butte, and two nieces. Funeral at Armstead with interment in Mountain View Dillon. County declamation contest set for Saturday in Dillon with district winners to advance. Districts Dillon North South Wisdom Lima and Dillon public schools attend.
Mrs. Harry Andrus and Mrs. Frank Nelson with Miss Lorene Nelson are visiting Spokane. Mrs. Andrus is staying with her daughter Mrs. Wilma Colfer while Mrs. Nelson and Miss Lorene Nelson are guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. David Bullivan.
Former Dillon instructor Emery M. Gibson appointed registrar at the Normal college replacing Louise B. Freeman. Gibson, a Wenatchee high school teacher, begins duties April first after earning a bachelor’s in business administration at Montana State University Missoula and doing graduate work there.
The spring quarter opened with an entertainment program as freshmen staged a one act play titled Station YYYY coached by Barbara Tower. Cast included Herbert Winstead Dillon John Christensen Dillon Bill Bates Dillon Roger Colby Harry Blackburn Hot Springs chauffeur William Olsen Great Falls Anita Winstead Benny Eakman Great Falls Mrs Winstead Cynthia Moore Stevensville Caroline Winstead Myrtle Adams Helena Maid Ella Conrow Livingston. Beginning this quarter monthly assemblies will let freshmen sophomores juniors and seniors discuss interests specific to their class and general student body.
Coroner James E. Phillips held inquests in Dillon last Wednesday and Thursday into the deaths of Clay Roselle Rudy Elking and Jim Nolan. Roselle and Elking were shot by Nolan in Armstead Monday night March 21 and Nolan killed himself the next morning. verdicts: Roselle and Elking died from gunshot wounds inflicted by Nolan. Nolan died from a self inflicted gunshot wound. Witnesses included Sheriff Orr B J Metlen Dr Poindexter H M Brundage and Jesse Brown.
An annual farmers party hosted by Beaverhead County High School Future Farmers chapter invites ranchers and their families to a Saturday night event in the school gym. The program promises entertainment and old-time dancing with refreshments. Admission is 50 cents per family.
Dr. W. F. Cagewell reports a active effort to shield the public from spotted fever. Vaccination is under way in infested towns and for essential workers. About a thousand people have received serum from Hamilton laboratory now federally operated. The spotted fever lab payroll runs about $60 000 annually after federal takeover.
Missoula forest service will ship 30000 emergency rations starting Monday. Milk bacon chocolate and sugar are removed and replaced with fruit and a candy bar. Each sack includes roast beef hash corned beef pork and beans cheese hardtack coffee raisins fruit and candy. cost about 59 cents.
Beaverhead County high school agricultural students judged livestock on Powell County ranches last Friday. Guided by Supervisor Bernard Williams they visited the Mount Haggin lambing plant and Kohrs ranch where Hamp shire sheep and Hereford bulls were evaluated. At the prison farm Duroc Jersey hogs were judged with Ralph Tope winning first, George Pederson second and Bob Peterson third.
Frederick Crouse Morse Waldorf and Clarence Decker from Bozeman visited Montana College for a Sunday social at the home talks event.
Dillon Boy Scout Melbourne Jackson raised to Life Scout rank at the monthly Court of Honor held last Friday night. Fourteen merit badges were awarded to C. W. Stallings Jr., Jack Reeves, Melbourne Jackson, Bill Bayerd, Eugene Smith, Wilbur Gilbert Jr., James Kelly Jr., and W. J. Best. Superintendent Charles Henry presided.
George M. Gosman was renominated for the District No. 10 Dillon public schools board and will face no opposition in Saturday elections. Four Dillon alderman candidates were renominated and will run unopposed, with terms expiring this year.
The Dillon Rotary Club hosted a Washington bicentennial declamation event with district winners and two Dillon Boy Scouts as speakers. Ruth Kelly performed Our Washington, Craig Anderson presented a Washington letter excerpt, Billy Tower delivered The Glory of Washington, and Wilbur Gilbert Jr. spoke on Boy Scout work.
Dillon churches report record Easter attendance with beautify Easter music. Methodist and First Lutheran held morning and evening services while St. Rose, St. James and other parishes offered high mass, holy communion and sunrise meetings. A traditional fashion parade complemented celebrations. In business notes W E Selner moved his jewelry and repair operations to City Drug on Montana Street and George M Gosman plans extensive store alterations in the Masonic building.
