It skewers Roosevelt, the Supreme Court, stock market fears, and novel slang such as Khaki Wacky. It ends noting an interstate probe into the Moffat Tunnel and hints at continued column On page 8.
Neal Sullivan of Dillon and Rosa Lee Brown of Armstead are among three students who earned straight A s at Montana State Normal College in the winter quarter ending last week. Sullivan ranked in the top ten percent with 18 credit hours. The honor roll lists the top ten percent with at least 14 credits. Awards were presented at the 10 o clock assembly for basketball music women's athletics and debate with letters going to Aitken Aitken Good Burgess Bradley Dupuis George Kipp Schultz Womack and Debating recipient Claribel Houchen Fairview. Ten Beaverhead county draftees and two out of state inductees were guests of the Dillon Chamber of Commerce at a banquet. Inductees later attended a joint band concert at Beaverhead county high school. George Baker delivered the main address recalling war camp life while E. W. Bond introduced him.
Musical groups from the Normal college and training school give a spring concert at the college auditorium with the Little Symphony orchestra directed by Ralph McFadden and a 21 member personnel. The training school a capella choir of 42 voices led by Ruth Ecklund will perform multiple pieces. Vernon Taylor directs the men’s and women’s glee clubs and the mixed chorus. the finale is Now the Day Is Over. James J. Harrington of the Montana State Employment Service in Butte registers skilled workers in Dillon for possible defense industry work. Registrations occurred at the courthouse as part of a national effort to locate skilled craftsmen in aircraft, shipbuilding, and related fields. those unable to attend may write to 30 West Granite Street, Butte.
Beav erhead county resident Mrs. Joseph F. Gelhaus dies at home in Dillon March 19 after months of ill health. Born Mary Catherine Naughton April 29 1870 near Virginia City she married J F Gelhaus in 1898 and moved to Dillon in 1916. Survived by husband two sons a daughter and several in laws plus siblings. Requiem Mass held at St Rose church March 21 with interment at Mountain View Cemetery.
About 60 college delegates from Billings Bozeman Missoula Havre and Butte meet 30 Dillon Lutheran Students for a regional Lutheran Students Association of America conference at First Lutheran Church. Activities include banquets Bible studies business sessions forums officer installation and a closing address by Rev. F A Schiotz.
Mr and Mrs LaSharon Montgomery announce the birth of their infant daughter on March 15 at Barrett Hospital. The baby will be named Hester Sharon.
Beaverhead county originally set a gross quota of 128 men through June 30. The local board reports 63 men in regular branches plus National Guard and anticipated enlistments have reduced the adjusted quota to 57. Names from Dillon and surrounding towns include Harris, Denny, Chism, McGahan, Reis, Swetish, Wagner, Brothers, Korparski, Smithies, Michelish, Lohman, Bean, Johnson, Phillips, Stepp, Christensen, Shaffner, Pahnis, Lindell, and O Day with marine corps entries and naval service reports pending.
A sales drive for tickets to Legionantics began in Dillon under E. W. Bond. Tickets cost 50 cents, exchangeable at Gosman Drug for reserved seats. center bloc seats cost 75 cents plus 25 cents exchange. Direct purchases allowed. Dr. Marlin K. Farmer directs rehearsals ahead of Friday and Saturday performances featuring local acts and parody sketches.

Mr and Mrs J H Gilbert returned from Atlanta where their daughter Jean wed Waldo Raymond Jaax son of Mrs Waldo Jaax of Mankato Minnesota on March 8 at the Cathedral of St Phillips The ceremony was by Dean Raimundo DeOries The only attendants were Mrs Culver Davis and Jack Dorsey After a wedding supper at the Atlanta Biltmore hotel the couple plans a short trip to Miami and will reside at 1178 Piedmont Ave Atlanta
Ed Hanley, 38, was arrested in Dillon by Sheriff Paul Temple and charged with grand larceny. He allegedly stole guns and a bed roll from the Foster Bros. sheep ranch near Sheridan. He was returned to Madison county to stand trial. Hanley had a 1937 grand larceny conviction and served about two years at Deer Lodge penitentiary.
Rotarians heard Normal College Bulldogs coach Bill Straugh describe their journey to the Kansas City basketball tourney where 32 conference winners competed. Ten thousand to twelve thousand admissions were paid across sessions as the Dillon squad traveled by car and faced teams from Be midji Minnesota to Monmouth Oregon, with San Diego State the eventual champion.
A near capacity crowd attended a Sunday evening joint concert by Beaverhead County High School and Montana State College bands. The 58 visiting musicians from 43 Montana communities and Hazelton Idaho performed, with Mel Jackson directing the first half and Lou Howard leading the visiting band.
A party of cattle feeders and breeders from Beaverhead toured Bitterroot beef feed yards yesterday. At Ed O'Hare ranch they were joined by County Agent M. M. Oliphant and Bitterroot ranchers. Local travelers included Carl Hartwig Lars Kals tra Bill Garrison Norman Nelson Arnold Benson Bill Carroll Frank Madden and Bernard Williams. They planned to return this evening.
Dillon shooter Herman Peterson set the pace at the Dillon Gun Club invitational trap shoot. Despite high wind and snow he totaled 91x100 in singles 43x50 in doubles and 39x50 in 24-yard handicap. About thirty sportsmen competed from Jackson Butte Billings Sheridan and the host club.
John G. Fitzsimmons aged 24 died at Barrett hospital after injuries from a fall during REA line construction more than a year earlier. Born January 17 1917 in Murfreesboro Arkansas he lived in Dillon five years. Survived by parents two brothers C L and R L of Dillon three sisters Lucinda Wanda and Virginia Nix. Services at Brundage chapel with Rev Leonard Thompson First Lutheran Church. Interment Mountain View Cemetery.
Ernest Orr of Dillon was re elected president of the Beaver head Madison Farm Loan association at its annual meeting last Saturday. Officers named include Parke T. Scott Armstead vice president A E Williams Bozeman secretary treasurer and George E Graham Bozeman assistant secretary. Roscoe Cornell H M Miller and George Hughes named to the board of directors. J C McCaustland vice president of the Federal Land Bank Spokane spoke on policy. Music and readings were provided by local performers. Parke T Scott introduced the talent.
State liquor officials order new hours after April 1 with stores opening at noon and closing at 8 p m. Current alerts show 10 a m to 6 p m. Administrator Ray L Wahl dispatched bulletins to all vendors announcing the change.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Fairbanks of Lima were seen shopping in Dillon on Saturday as part of a local outing.
A festive Saturday serenade by a seven member German band brightened Beaverhead shoppers. Led by Peggy Quackenbush, the group drew attention with lively baton work while Annabel George and Edwin Ashworth provided notable performances. A light friendly rivalry between Harry Tash and Bob Quackenbush added to the scene.
The Beaverhead county women sponsor a silver tea next Saturday afternoon at 3 30 to aid Barrett Hospital. The event, annual, invites all county women with Mrs L M Holloran heading the committee and prize for the most unique apron. Proceeds go to Louise Buhrer for hospital needs.
