The Kiwanis club of Dillon was formally organized at an enthusiastic gathering of local business and professional men and Butte residents last Thursday night at the Trail cafe dining room. Officers were elected at the first dinner last night. Charter night is planned soon.
Veteran Beaverhead high school squad will represent District 16 at the Class B Divisional Journey in Billings this week.
Montana State Normal college sophomores won first place in the Booster club’s annual vodvil at the college auditorium presenting Professor Quiz a radio spoof. Women’s Athletic association took second with God Bless America and the freshman class took third with Kay Kayser.
William Meyer, Butte attorney, addressed the Dillon Rotary Club dinner Monday night. He defined democracy as liberty and urged that freedom of speech and choice define Americanism, contrasting it with usage by dictators in other countries.
Tryouts were held at the Montana Power office for the three act comedy The Whole Towns Talking to be presented by the Dillon Ski club here in April under Ed Buck. The show, suited for amateurs, will feature Ski club members and other local thespians. The club also enjoyed night skiing at the Elkhorn slide last Saturday with torches lighting the course.
Seventeen women, first of their sex to serve on a Beaverhead County jury, join 60 jurors drawn by Judge Henry G. Rodgers for the district court term starting March 6. Women became eligible for jury service January 1 under a new state law. The list includes Gladys Bonnifield Ruby V Brown Mary Burles Christina C Christiansen Helen Contway Elizabeth Davis Dorothea Lohr etc.
Mr and Mrs Fred Routledge welcome their son born last Thursday evening at Mrs Rebecca Connelleys home. The infant is Dillon s first Leap Year baby in many years and, born on February 29, will be 40 on his tenth birthday.
Elks announce another all dance night at the Elks home for members and their ladies. Admission requires no paid up card and the event continues the group’s popular socials since moving to the new home.
W. R. Allen of Wise River filed last week on the Republican ticket for the first congressional district nomination. A former lieutenant governor and longtime GOP figure, he joins only W. J. McCormick of Missoula as declared opponents, with J. Thorkelson possibly seeking renomination. Beaverhead Gun Club sets three registered shoots this season with dates to be fixed by the A T A, and a special meeting planned to elect officers after insufficient attendance.
A three day Bea verhead Silver Bow Farmers Union school opens at Lavon hall near Reichle led by Mrs J B Garrison of Butte with A L Hasbrouck Mrs A J Rife and H S Sylvester on the first program. Evening cooperative supper opens an unemployment forum led by John Albers and shows by Walter Good on cooperative marketing.
Helena March 6 Over $15 000 in unemployment compensation has been paid to Beaverhead County workers in seven months. Barclay Craighead, chairman of the unemployment compensation commission, says about 1400 dollars weekly is being sent into the county. The winter peak is expected to drop with spring agricultural and construction work.
Martin Jackson of Jackson filed today for the Republican nomination to the Beaverhead County Commission District 3. He completes his second term as commissioner and is part of a pioneer Beaverhead family known as a prot ide rock man in the Big Hole basin.
In the Kansas City international flyer shoot, Ted Renfro tied for top with Phil Miller and Olin by hitting 95 of 100. Miller won the shootoff 14-13 after Olin missed his eighth bird. Herman Peterson Franz Jenkins all scored 93, Otto Schulz 92, as Southwestern Montana shooters placed high and Schulz earned a gold button for 15 straight KC events.
Dillon High School leads District 16 Class B into Billings for the Southern Divisional tournament opener against Big Timber at 6 30 PM. The Beavers, captained by Good and with a deep roster, seek a victory in a long standing Dillon Big Timber feud while Hardin Sacred Heart and Deer Lodge Red Lodge Klein also compete in the bracket.
Anglers anticipate Loch Leven trout in the Beaverhead River within two years as a planned shipment advances the project. Meanwhile, drama fills a Montana Normal vs Montana School of Mines basketball clash ending 54 to 51 after a tense finish and a last-second miss. Davison tops Normal scorers with 16 points as the crowd erupts in a high‑scoring battle.
Thomas Scott, a longtime Dillon resident of 41 years, died Sunday morning at Murray hospital in Butte after a brief illness. He was 76, born in Scotland on February 24, 1864, and moved to Dillon in 1899 to work as a carpenter and cabinet maker. He was widely known and his death shocked many friends.
Dave H. Williams was elected president of Dillon Country Club for the year, succeeding Dale Tash. Miss Glenna Vance was elected secretary, and Sam Wilkinson, vice-president. The board includes Tash and J. W. Rees. Plans call for clubhouse grounds landscaping and new electric lights via the Vigilante rural electrification line in 1940.
Tommy Tucker ten year old son of Mr and Mrs Ed Tucker of Dillon was struck by a passing car on Highway 91 near Dillon. He suffered a deep scalp wound an injured arm and multiple cuts as he was thrown ten feet into a ditch. The car driven by John H Mansfield of Bercail Mont was northbound when the crash occurred. He was released after investigation by highway patrolman Robert Wright and the youth was taken to Barrett hospital.
Under Beaverhead Dairy association sponsorship a public program will be held at the training school auditorium Friday night at 8 oclock. Mrs. Henrietta Crockett a Montana Tuberculosis association leader will speak on milk value and show talking pictures. G A Norris Montana Milk Control board secretary will attend and exhibit color motion pictures of Montana scenic areas Tommy Ferguson of Helena will perform Scotch songs. All interested in milk use are invited.
