Beaverhead County High School wins district hoops and awards

Beaverhead County High School finished second in the mining district basketball tournament at Missoula, trailing Missoula and ahead of Dillon in the standings. Tom Olmsted placed second in extemporaneous speaking and will represent the local high school in the state contest at Bozeman. The Dillon squad defeated Jefferson County 44 to 18 and edged Anaconda 12 to 10 to reach the state event. The team, led by Coach Knudsen, will depart March 7 for Bozeman with a strong chance to place.

Montana Livestock Upward Trend Masks Value Decline

Montana's livestock numbers rose over the past year according to F. W. Beier Jr. total stock increased though overall value dropped by about fifteen million dollars. Horses Milch cows cattle sheep and swine counts and values show mixed shifts amid high production costs and lower prices. The report notes light stock movements, promising wool and sheep prices, and a potential turning point toward diversified farming with better financing.

Dillon Draws Livingston In State Tournament Opener

Beaverhead County High draws Livingston in the state basketball tournament in Bozeman March 8 to 11. Local fans expect Dillon to win their first game as Missoula faces Billings and other opening matchups are listed including Great Falls versus Glasgow and Havre versus Lewistown. If Beaverhead wins, they would face the winner of the Haute Lewistown game.

Montana Counties Face Refunds for Bachelor Tax

Montana counties must refund the $3 bachelor tax to unmarried men who apply correctly, after the Montana Supreme Court declared the poll tax unconstitutional. Attorney General Rankin notes section 2222 allows refunds for taxes paid erroneously or illegally collected and says this applies to the bachelor tax though funds may not yet have been disbursed.

Butte Man Casey Transported After Officer Intercept

Sheriff Dan Mooney received a note from prison guard W G Green claiming an officer wanted Casey removed from a train south of Dillon. The transfer occurred after the Silver Bow county attorney telephoned for Casey’s removal, carried out by Armstead constable Dellar Gordon. Casey faced a charge of robbing the Silver Bow Motor Company in Butte.

Another Horse Sale March 11 Yet Another Sale Noted

Severe weather did not dampen the mid winter horse auction last Saturday. Prices were better than recent times though few horses were sold and none left the county. One team brought 260 dollars. Buyers from outside showed interest but held on, citing continued bad weather. George Ditty, manager of the Dillon Horse Sales, announced another one day sale for Saturday March 11 focusing on horses only.

Danish Masquerade Night Delights Dillon Crowd

Danish residents from across the county gathered at the Dart hall in Dillon for a winter masked ball. The Tessier orchestra provided music as attendees enjoyed supper at midnight and again at 3 a.m. Social event ran into the early hours with many masked participants and eager spectators.

The Francis Dunn Paul Judge Orpha Baker and Muriel Paddock quartet will compete in the state high school musical contest in Big Timber on March 31. Another recital is scheduled for March 20.

Big Dillon Auto Deal Unites Woodside Murray Interests

One of Dillon’s largest business transactions sees Fred Woodside acquire all Roy Murray interests in Montana Auto Supply, with Murray obtaining Woodside interests in Butte’s Butte Buick.
