Dillon to Open Bond Bids for Street Paving District

The City Council will meet in a special session next Friday evening to open bids and consider selling $200 000 in bonds to finance street paving in Special Improvement District No 18. The district covers most of Dillon's residential area between the Union Pacific Railroad right of way and Atlantic Street, about 3.8 miles of paving.

Church Group Sails for Westminster Assembly Tour

Four members of the Westminster Fellowship of Dillon Presbyterian Church depart June 23 for the National Westminster Fellowship Assembly at Grinnell College Iowa. They travel with two advisors and will join Montana Oregon and Washington delegations on a Mission Study tour visiting Chicago Denver Santa Fe Albuquerque Canada Los Angeles San Francisco Portland Spokane and Presbyterian institutions along the route. They return to Dillon in July.

Butte Good Will Caravan Visits Dillon on Friday

Beaverhead officials welcome Butte Good Will tour groupe as 60 adults and 20 children travel through Dillon stopping at the Beaverhead Museum. Mayors Lovell and Donnelley exchange greetings while tours and city improvement plans are outlined for the summer.

Shipping of Wool Clip Under Way Despite Rain Delays

Edgar Williams of the Williams Warehouse reports shearing is progressing with three or four large flock owners finished. Weather slowed the start but the big job should finish early in July as usual. Fleeces are cleaner and slightly lighter due to a cold winter. The warehouse ships about 750,000 pounds yearly, primarily to Boston.

Dillon Soloist In Recital at College Thursday

Ray Simon a Dillon native and Western Montana College of Education alumnus offers a Thursday July 27 8 PM vocal recital in the college auditorium. Singers career includes Handel Mozart Bach and DuBois works with St Olaf Choir and university ensembles. He plans to teach vocal music in Truman Minnesota next year and invites the public with no admission charge.

Dr Hawkins Named New Vet Instructor at Montana State

Dr William W Hawkins Jr son of Mr and Mrs W W Hawkins of Dillon will become instructor in veterinary science at Montana State College Bozeman effective July 1. His degrees include a DVM from Washington State College and a 1950 BS from Montana State. He previously worked for Lacy Livestock Co and taught veterans on the job training in Dell Montana.

Driver of Week Contest Starts Here on Sunday

A Safe Driver of the Week contest starts Sunday, June 30 in Dillon, announced by Beaverhead Traffic Safety Council. Winners are chosen by the Dillon police, with Chief Leo Williams presenting prizes and council membership. Rev. E W Andrews cites 525 traffic casualties in Beaverhead County over five years to promote safer driving.

Vigilante Board Awards Contract for Bannack-Wisdom Line

The Vigilante Electric Cooperative board met in Jackson at the Diamond Bar Inn to award the Bannack-Wisdom transmission line project. Hi-Line Construction Co of Wolf Point bid 241343.15 for 42 miles of line plus Wisdon Substation work, bonds, and easements. Approval moves to Rural Electrification Administration for SEA. Construction to start in 4 to 6 weeks.

Sullivan succeeds Florian as pastor at St Rose

Rev Bernard Sullivan is named new pastor of St Rose parish in Dillon replacing Rev Martin Florian who moves to St Mary’s in Stevensville. Installation was at St Rose with Monsignor Engish presiding. Sullivan, a Butte native and Carroll College alumnus, was ordained in 1944 and previously served in Anaconda and Whitehall.

Concert Season Announced by Community Concert Association

The Dillon Community Concert Association unveils the 1957 58 attractions starting with a February opening by the Gotham Trio, featuring violinist cellist and pianist. Camilla Williams, renowned American lyric soprano, follows with a piano appearance. The finale features the Little Gaelic Singers of County Derry with baritone Michael McWilliams.
