Arthur Pilon Narrowly Survives Train Collision

Arthur Pilon a Montana Auto Supply employee narrowly escaped injury when the Ford he drove was struck by a freight train last Monday noon. The car was crushed beneath a boxcar but Pilon freed himself with only scratches after the wreck was cleared. Onlookers say he drove onto the tracks, unable to see the approaching train. Plunge Construction Starts At Grasshopper Valley

Chris Olsen of Dillon will oversee the hot water plunge project with concrete work to begin immediately. Most materials are on site and residents will assist in hauling remaining supplies to speed completion targeted for late August.

Celebration for Soldiers to Hold Fourth of July Parade

A city mass meeting led to a planned Independence Day celebration with a parade, speakers, singing, and a big farewell dance for 118 soldiers departing tomorrow for Camp Lewis. A banquet at Andrus Hotel precedes the dance at Dillmont Park to honor the contingent.

Salons to Close During Mobilization Period in Dillon

Saloons in Dillon will close today at noon and stay shut until after a large troop movement ends tomorrow afternoon. Sentries with new mobilization badges will be barred from serving any intoxicants to badge wearers. Mrs. Nelson arrives from Twin Bridges to stay until Alderic Tessier departs for Camp Lewis.

Fourth of July celebration moved to Dillmont park

A Dillon fourth of July event is canceled in town and moved to Dillmont park. The plan is a large community picnic with picnickers bringing their own meals, band music, patriotic speeches, singing, and dancing in the pavilion. The Baxter Tonney Orchestra will provide afternoon and evening music.

DRAFTED MAN DROWNED NEAR LIBBY

Jay Baker reports Harry David Strain, drafted Dillon resident, drowned in the Kootenai river near Libby while breaking a horse. Strain had registered at Gibbons in the Big Hole basin last June and worked in the region for several months before the accident.
