Prospects for Beaverhead County Fair on September 24 to 26 improve as organizers plan a larger three day event. A note from Chief Tenday of Fort Hall Idaho expresses interest in bringing a railway train into Dillon for a celebratory visit during the fair.
Nine major firms represent at Dillon wool market as independent and co operative buyers contend for Beaverhead county fleeces. Big lots opened for inspection, with expected activity to begin soon and end by week’s close. Representatives include Harry Ballard for S Silberman and others from Dufur, Deway Gould, Draper & Co., Jeremiah Williams, and local buyers.
Enrollment at the Normal college stands at 280 students, a 15 percent increase from last year. The gain is welcomed by the college and town, with a slight possible rise in enrollments this week.
The Montana Congress of Parents and Teachers distributes nine issues across the state this year. Dillon women arranged printing, with Mrs. Frank Hazelbaker as business manager and Mrs. D A Galt as editor. Leadership includes Mrs. J C Whitham and Mrs. J C Wedum in distribution roles.
Sheldon E. Davis of Montana State Normal College and his wife Mrs Davie return with their daughter Dorothy after a sabbatical year. The family logged about 15000 miles touring thirty states from Maine to Florida, California and the Pacific coast, with stays in Boston and New York City and two months in New Orleans.
Terry Browning well known Dillon businessman and top Elks leader departs July 1 for Atlantic City to attend the National Elk convention as a representative of the Dillon lodge. He will join Elks from every lodge in the state and visit Washington Philadelphia New York City and Boston during the trip.
Dillon residents plan a trip to Melrose for a large Independence Day celebration featuring a rodeo and a full morning program. Fred Gill heads the committee with Roy Peterson James La Marche and John C. Dean assisting. Events include horse races pony races and a 100-yard dash with generous purses and diverse contests starting at 10 AM. Ruby Valley wool pool sold Wednesday for 2314 cents, about 9 percent below last year, with over 70 local growers contributing slips from tiny to 1500 fleeces.
Mr and Mrs F W Price from Malad Idaho spent the weekend at the home of Mrs Henry They were joined by their two daughters and Mrs L M Beck and Mrs J E Peterson staying as guests of the host family the visit included extended family in the area.
Mr and Mrs W D Sandy spent last weekend in Dillon visiting at the Dillon ranch home of Mrs Terrance Flynn the wife’s mother. The visit centered around a family stay at the Flynn residence on Twin Bridges road.
The state highway commission will let a 16 mile contract in Beaverhead county for grading the section of United States project 91 from Dillon southward toward Bedrock. The route follows Beaverhead river and the rail line, with most right of way secured except a small portion on the M A Henneberry ranch. This marks the longest U S 91 contract in the county and covers a rough canyon and hill section feared in wet weather.
Beaverhead County reports a July 15 primary registration of 3,305, up 236 from 1928. Dillon South leads gains with 58 more voters, Wisdom up 47, and Coolidge remains smallest precinct at seven electors. Several precincts show slight declines, and party slates list 27 Republican candidates and 17 Democrats, including county hopefuls.
W. J. Bierrum appointed to direct the war against the Canada thistle calls a countywide meeting for landowners. The gathering is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. at the Beaverhead auditorium.
Beaverhead County gains 810 residents over the past decade according to Montana Taxpayer's Association figures though not official. The list ranks Silver Bow highest and Meagher lowest with Beaverhead at 28th, among 25 counties showing growth out of 56.
Ten golfers start the annual tournament last Sunday and play continues until July 6 as anglers chase a $100 prize. Hi Brundage tops the Dillon county contest with an eight pound Rainbow trout caught at the lower Big Hole. Jud Brundage excited by his river splash wins, bringing home nearly forty pounds of Rainbow trout with five two-pound fish. The Dillon Country Club event began with elimination rounds and will wrap with finals on Sunday July 6.
On a stopover in Dillon Judge Henry G. Rodgers of Madison Beav erhead and Jefferson counties seeks the Republican nomination for Associate Justice. O E Bergeson assists as campaign manager during a brief Helena bound visit.
Rumblings of dissatisfaction with features of the proposed compensation bill surfaced as delegates gathered for the Montana Federation of Labor convention in Great Falls. The measure, drawn by a federation committee, has petitions circulating and was introduced to about 125 delegates led by George Yeager. Mayor A J Fousek welcomed the group at the assembly.
From the Grasshopper area, Mr. and Mrs. Andy Hayes, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Knoll, Mrs. Hans Dons, Miss Alice Don and Ray Tur Dilion are cited as residents surveyed from their homes on the Grasshopper.
