NG Ford car with a false bottom holding 20 gallons of whiskey was found behind Featheroff ranch. Bissel Austin and Clarence Barry were arrested after being stopped entering the city. the car and warrant whiskey are in sheriff custody. Both men were released on $100 cash bonds.
A county wide picnic and barbecue is set for July 5 and 6 at Elkhorn Springs. Activities include an outdoor pool, planned entertainment, and a basket lunch weekend in a popular county resort. District officials Fenn and Loutz are due to review road work while Kenneth Wolfe leads construction supervision.
City officials led by Mayor J E Monroe implement new water rules to curb lawn sprinkler use. Beginning last Saturday residents face Sunday bans and alternate day watering, with south Orr street allowed Mon Wed Fri evenings and north Orr street on Tue Thu Sat. Wilful waste may trigger total sprinkler elimination.
One month old infant of Mr and Mrs Will Gleed died last Sunday at the family home in Lima. Funeral services were held there earlier in the week and interment followed in the Lima Cemetery.
James Kabble, a Greek sheepherder employed by Craver Livestock Co., was arrested by Sheriff Wyman in Dillon on charges of setting fires on public domain near the forest reserve by Grant. Bond set at $5,000. Local officials report multiple fires inside reserve or on public domain and warn of stiff penalties.
Announcement states J. R. Long Co sold their wool clip at 66 cents per pound. J. R. Patterson bought for Union Wool House of Boston. Clip weighs about 90,000 pounds this year.
Helena June 24. Chancellor C. Elliott expects a full list of new instructors for all state schools to be ready for the state board of education at the next meeting in July. Vacancies include president of the state normal and dean of the school of engineering at Bozeman.
Arthur Trueman of Melrose brought George Dahl to Dillon on a charge of leaving a camp fire burning in the Beaverhead forest reserve. Dahl was found guilty and fined 50 dollars. Dahl herded sheep for Matt Anderson. Mr and Mrs G Woder and their small daughter escaped serious injury when their Ford tipped over near Sheep Creek basin on a Sunday night due to poor lights.
Free and Raymond Garver recently returned from the University of Montana in Missoula to their home city. They plan to spend the summer here.
J A Kearns of Dewey Gould joins Halowell, Jones and Donald in Beaverhead county's wool buying spree. The week ends with about half a million pounds purchased since last Wednesday, pushing total Beaverhead purchases beyond two million pounds. Notable clips include Arby Beardalee about 26 000 fleeces and Gleed around 15 000 fleeces. Henry Thompson clip praised for finer grade wool. Prices hover around fifty five and fifty six cents. A busy warehouse crews load bags for shipment to Chicago as heavy wagons haul in daily.
EB T Patrick, Dillon's employment agent, says Beaverhead county has jobs for every man who wants to work. Shearing, wool warehouse labor, city improvement, street paving, water hydrants, and lighting projects drive demand. Ranch hands and hay diggers remain strong, with more work than laborers through fall. forest fire duties have already used dozens of men.
Last Thursday R. T. Wemple purchased Jay B. Holtz interests in the contracting and building trade in the city. The business will continue along its existing lines and Mr Holtz will work as a carpenter for the time being.
Clayton Howell arrived in town Friday from Dell and stopped for a brief visit before continuing his trip.
Dillon prepares for its fifth annual Chautauqua from August 18 to 19 featuring lectures by Ida M Tarbell Edwin M Whitney and Dr Joseph Clare and a Czecho Slovak band. Billison White books private Peat and other notable speakers with M C Reed as superintendent and Mildred F Gopirow overseeing junior activities.
Butte will host the 36th annual meeting of the Society of Montana Pioneers on August 29 and 30. Secretary J A Sanders of Helena says no fewer than 300 members are expected. Programs are not yet finished, but preliminary plans promise an engaging event with generous Butte hospitality.
George Brady aged about sixty years died last Sunday at Argenta while working at John Conda's mining property. His remains were brought to Dillon yesterday and the funeral will be held in this city.
Beaverhead County prepares for a special election on the first Tuesday in September 1919 to decide Referendum Measures Nos. 13 and 14. The county clerk urges all electors to register by July 19 1919 and provides registration options and locations.
Deer Lodge June 24 Hay in Deer Lodge valley is now worth 40 per ton and may rise if heat continues. Dry-land farmers fall behind as feed becomes scarce in foothills and mountains. If rains come soon, grass may be saved. otherwise large livestock shipments from the county are expected this fall due to high hay prices and limited pasture.
Mr and Mrs S Stevenson touring toward Canada from southern California paused in Dillon last week. They visited the grave of Mrs Stevensons brother Samuel Davis who died in this city during the influenza epidemic. The couple traveled about 1600 miles in 12 days.
The box score notes hits and errors with Dillon players Madden Henry and Harned scoring and left on base counts. Next Sunday Dillon travels to Jackson for an expected large fan turnout.
The Salvation Army launches its Home Service campaign in Montana from July 7 to 12. A rural farmer accepts the appeal, noting his motto charity begins at home, and supports local welfare through the drive.
Washington reports the government has recovered 12 percent of original cost from airplane sales. Eleven hundred J-1 planes sold at 200 dollars each, about 4 percent. 1,616 N-4 planes at 400 dollars each, 8 percent. 4,608 Curtis Motors sold at 400 dollars each, 19 percent. Curtis Aeroplane and Motor Company bought the entire lot.
