Smelter at Indian Queen mine proves able to handle district ores

Thomas Stevens reports the Birch Creek Indian Queen smelter fired up last week and works perfectly. About 600 of copper matte valued at over 600 dollars was produced on Sunday, with Beaverhead county’s first copper smelt on display. The plant will process about 30 tons daily, sending matte directly to refineries without ore milling. The project boosts local mining and may spark further smelter construction in Beaverhead.

Mining Notes Highlight Saginaw Mine Prospects and Rail Link Hopes

Dunc Wadams owner of the Saginaw group in the Big Hole basin says a 300 foot shaft is sunk and lease negotiations may revive development in months. The mine shows several thousand tons of 20 percent copper in sight with low grade ore on the dump, but long freight to the railroad hurts profit. A matting furnace may soon be set up. Rumors of a railroad line in Horse Prairie spurs mining activity in the Bioody Dick district and a Parkie road could lower freighting costs enabling shipment to smelters. Only one dredge boat operates this season near Horse Prairie creek.
