Unusual Baby Contest at the Montana State Fair

Helena July 15 Special The Montana State Fair introduces a Better Babies contest with county prizes of 10 gold to each of 34 counties, totaling 340, plus grand prizes of 100 for the best boy and 100 for the best girl, with medals and certificates. Panama July 21 Colonel George W Goethals chief engineer Panama canal says steam shovel work in the Culebra cut will proceed on the assumption the Gamboa dike will be dynamited October 10 The dike destruction will let Gatun lake flood the cut and connect the Atlantic and Pacific though full navigation may wait for some time.

Small Boy Dies After Burns Near Wise River

From Wise River in the Big Hole valley comes the sad news of an accident Friday in which the 18 month old son of Mr and Mrs J M Burdick lost his life. The child fell into a pan of boiling water left on the floor for scrubbing as the family briefly left him to fetch the mail. Rescue efforts began at once but eight miles from home at the Melrose pump station the youngster died en route to a physician. Bill was a general favorite in the neighborhood.

Dillon Hosts Two Trainloads For Picnic And Ball

Dillon welcomed two large visitor groups from Butte and Salmon City Idaho over a weekend of outdoor events. The Sons of St George with about 1000 members held games, a wrestling match between Blaker and Zimmer drew crowds, and the Montana State Band provided music. Sunday featured a parade, a major ball game, and a band concert, with local officials noting strong community support and hospitality.

Lon Guy Xouting Fraud Suspect Captured in Salem

Lon Guy a former Beaverhead county stock inspector sought on charges of passing worthless checks was captured in Salem Oregon after a cross state flight from Butte. He allegedly passed checks for 300 and 225 dollars and bought jewelry in Butte with a bad check totaling 800 dollars before fleeing to Idaho and then Oregon.

Dillon Defeats Salmon 7 to 1 in Notable Home Game

Dillon overwhelmed Salmon by seven to one on a sunlit Sunday. Leverett pitched a masterful one run, three-hit effort as Dillon fielded flawlessly. The visiting Salmon band and supporters provided spirited support, but Dillon’s defense and timely hitting sealed the win.
