Over 1500 residents attended a vigilante event as Beaverhead County seeks a share of federal highway funds. Delegation met Governor Cooney in Helena to press for main route and feeder road improvements, with the governor urging realistic expectations and proposing prioritized route choices.
Miss Elizabeth Ireland praised Montana's county schools for cutting expenses while warrants remain low and cash reserves hold. Beaverhead post of the American Legion hosted 1500 at Vigilante day at Dillmont park with miners and vigilantes pageantry. Anna Maniz won 26 prize. Joseph Stefanatz won 25. Silver Bow drum corps were absent. Baxter Tonrey orchestra provided the music.
Bill Ritchell won the broncho busting contest at the sixth annual Jackson rodeo held yesterday under Jim Johnson. Judges selected Ritchell from five finalists as crowds cheered. Ted Renfro, the international champion trapshooter, thrilled spectators with his marksman ship. The event featured calf roping bareback riding bulldogging a horse quadrille and other attractions with a barbecue and dance to close the day.
Secretary Murray Stebbins of the Montana Woolgrowers association estimates Montana's 1938 wool clip at about 6.4 million dollars, more than double the 1932 crop and about two million higher than two years ago. He says totals may rise if much of the crop is sold at top prices, with an estimated 32 million pounds and an average around 20 cents per pound. The Cook Sheep company at Dillon paid the highest price this year at 26 1/2 cents, while smaller clips traded as low as 10 to 11 cents.
Rains drenched Beaverhead county crops to help range grasses, signaling haying to begin soon in Beaverhead and other lower valleys. Ranchers describe moisture as badly needed and value as uncertain but promising for pasture and feeds.
Dillon prepares for the Montana Elks association state convention on August 10 to 12 with a visit by the new grand exalted ruler. The event coincides with Dillon firemen’s rodeo, expected to draw crowds from across the county, and a trapshoot by the Dillon Gun Club on the final two days.
Dillon Elks hosted a successful community dance at the Masonic hall Saturday night with a large turnout. Attendees included Exalted Ruler E. W. Johnson, E. L. Wheat, Mrs. Wheat, Deputy Sheriff and Mrs. W. E. Barry, Ott Gordon, Helen Wheat, and several others. The Elk orchestra led by Francis Tonney and Anson Baxter was a hit.
Five summer motor trips are planned for Montana State Normal College students. The schedule opens July 16 with visits to the School of Mines in Butte and the Anaconda smelter, then July 22 to Virginia City and historic sites along Sheridan Virginia Road, plus Twin Bridges state orphans home. Other stops include Bannack and Morrison cave with a July 29 group, and a three day Yellowstone Park tour July 28 29 and 30 covering 550 miles for ten dollars plus meals and lodging.
Funeral services for the late Matthew Thiel, a Bea verhead county youth, were held Thursday afternoon at Grace Methodist Church in Dillon. Dillon Lodge No. 1554, B. P. O. E., conducted the rites with Rev. J. A. Meeke as chaplain. Interment followed at Mountain View cemetery. A large turnout from the southern county attended.
Dillon finished sixth at the state swimming meet held in Gregson Saturday. Roy Forrester won the 40 yard junior boys event in 24 seconds and took third in the 100 yard freestyle. Jack Barrett earned two second places while coach Hugh Gray oversees Dillon's team.
Gibbonsville will host the annual picnic sponsored by the Beaverhead and Lemhi Mining associations and the Beaverhead Idaho Daughters of the American Revolution tentatively on Sunday August 13. Hundreds from Montana and Idaho are expected to attend with talks music and historical features. The event will again be at Sacajawea Park with camping and a scenic motor trip including a visit to the Big Hole battlefield.
Montana Federation of Labor delegates adopt resolutions on the civilian conservation corps bank nationalization school trustees elections Postal Savings access and public school funding. They urge Roosevelt to adjust CCC work to avoid undercutting local labor wages and condemn moves to curb public schools and educator salaries.
Thayer Alley of Superior Dairy suffered a deep wrist cut last Tuesday night when an ax slipped during wood cutting.
The Pacific Northwest states prepare to submit 738 construction projects totaling over 600 million dollars to the national public works program under the National Recovery Act. Washington lists 607 projects valued at about 201 million, Oregon 125 projects worth 82 million, with several on which costs are not yet estimated. Beaverhead wool sales near season close report two top clips selling for 26 cents and 25.75 cents, while local wood markets wind down with fewer outright sales and most transactions on consignment.
R W Boone and Fred Rife of Dillon were named among the four best bridge players in Montana as state champions in the East West division of the World Bridge Olympic. A Great Falls couple won the North South championship for the state. Many Dillon players participated, posting high scores in the Olympic event.
Mr and Mrs Francis Cashmore spent last week with the former's parents Mr and Mrs W F Cashmore. They traveled from Chicago where Mr Cashmore has been at Rush Medical College to Helena where he will be employed this summer.
Eight federal prohibition bureau attaches in Montana receive indefinite furloughs effective Friday. Maurice Fumash, administrator, is replaced by Harry M Mengler from the San Francisco office. Discharged: Sam H. Roberts, Clyde McLeemore, Anna Zacha, Ben Holter, William Shupp, Albert Wilkins, George Hunsby, Orville Woodgerd. Investigators reduced from 22 to 17 in the state.
A two day rodeo near Lima drew hundreds from Dillon and county areas under Bill Gray. Events included broncho busting bareback riding calf roping and wild cow milking with parades and dances at the Lima gym featuring Miller's Melody orchestra. Attendees praised promoter Bill Gray.
Two CCC workers Abe Solerwytz and Pool Fishman from Wise River camp were sentenced to 30 days in county jail for drunk and disorderly conduct. Harry Galbreth and Patricia Jackson were released on bond after a robbery arraignment. G W Judge and C W Nichols were fined $50 after pleading guilty to operating a truck without an M R C license.
Exalted Ruler E. W. Johnson and Past Exalted Ruler J. Leonard Innes of Dillon Lodge No 1554 E P O E depart by car for Milwaukee to attend the national convention as lodge delegates. They will be joined by Mrs Innes and plan a stop at Chicago's Century of Progress en route. Johnson will confer with the new grand exalted ruler about a proposed Elks visit next month.
