Nation wide irrigation program shows early success as Truckee Carson project in Nevada diverts water into ditches to irrigate about 50 000 acres. Government plans to expand over three years adding 300 000 acres, with a total project cost of 9 million dollars and initial government outlay of 1.5 million. The scheme includes a main canal from the Truckee to a Carson reservoir and a network of distributaries with drainage works. About 75 percent of land belongs to the government. settlers must take up to 80 acres and repay irrigation costs over ten years.
