Sheepman M. Smyth Succumbs After Cart Incident Near Point of Rocks

Madi son county sheepman Mneral Smyth died from a heart attack after helping free a stuck truck near Point of Rocks Sunday afternoon. He had led the Beaver and Madison county sheep industry for years and was 65. The funeral was held at the Masonic temple with Dillon lodge in charge and Rev. H N Trag officiating. Interment followed at Mountain View cemetery. He is survived by a widow, a son, a brother in Maine, stepchildren, a sister in Australia, and other relatives.

Severe winter cold grips western district after blizzard

The region endures a long cold snap with temperatures reaching minus 60 in higher areas and minus 22 in Dillon. Bursting water pipes and stalled cars mark the damage while ranchers report stressed livestock. Forecasters predict a gradual warmup today and tomorrow.

Pioneer of Beaverhead dies in Helena

Ilric D. Harding, longtime Dillon resident and dairyman, died last Friday at the Masonic home near Helena after a long illness. Born in 1864 in Whatcheer Iowa he lived in Dillon for about 40 years. He leaves a son Philip E. Harding and two daughters Mrs G A Keppner of Butte and Mrs Walter Zabel of Lewistown. Funeral held Sunday at Helena with Morning Star lodge A F and A M in charge.

Elks Hold Initiation and Union Pacific Excursion

Union Pacific excursion carried more than 25 Beaverhead residents to California for mid winter travel with many attending the elaborate Dillon Elks initiation. About 40 candidates are expected to be initiated at Gat Jay night February 15 with work by Butte and Anaconda Elks and pledges filed with Secretary Albert Baker.

Mining Men of Beaverhead County Form Association

Beaverhead county miners gathered in the county courthouse for the first Beaverhead Mining Association meeting. George H. French was elected president, Senator Pearl I. Smith vice president, Roy B. Herndon secretary treasurer, with a board representing most districts. Next meeting set for February 22 at Senator Smith’s office to plan activities and county mineral exhibits for display in Butte, Helena, and Dillon.

Beaverhead Local Holds Meet Friday

The Montana Education Association unit in Beaverhead enjoyed a dinner and program at the Normal College last Friday night. Despite severe weather reducing out of town attendance, most local educators were present for a theme on an old fashioned literary society. Debates on woman suffrage by Prof. R E H Albright and Miss O Eldora Ragan and humorous readings by Prof. Rush Jordan and Miss Genevieve Albertson followed. Miss Alice Russell served as secretary and the business session reviewed reports from Miss Genevieve Metlen, Prof. Rush Jordan, and Principal Herbert Wildman on the state assembly delegation.

Wool Marketing Plan Set to Start in 10 Days

The National Wool Marketing association plans to begin operations within ten days to acquire as much of the 1930 wool clip as possible. General manager J W Wilson said stocks would be stored at production points to meet consumer demand after a farm board conference.

Income Tax Forms To Be Filed At Helena

The collector for this district A Rasmussen says 1929 tax forms 1096 and 1090 should be filed with the Helena internal revenue office instead of Washington. Information blanks must be filed before February 15, not March 15 as in prior years.

DeMolay to Present Is Zat 0 at Hartwig Theatre

Beaverhead DeMolay chapter stages Is Zat 0 at Hartwig Theatre Dillon with two performances tomorrow afternoon and evening. Olive Scholz directs a large amateur cast featuring Eddie Cowan Buster Stultz A B Hurley Bert Orr and Susan Parker. Seats already show two full houses.

Dell Hotel Burglarized as Cash Is Stolen

Robbers used strong arm methods to break the hotel cash register at the Dell Hotel last Sunday night. The cash was taken to a rear shed and broken into. Sheriff W C Orr investigated from Dell with no arrests at this time. Other notes include F B Williams returning from California and Mrs Fero Marchesseau planning a winter trip to Los Angeles.

County Claims Filing Deadline Set by State Examiner

Notices state that all county claims in the state must be filed earlier this year with the state examiner. Claims are to be submitted by the first Monday each month, when county boards meet to approve them.

Eliels Defeat Midwest 33 to 18 In Local Meet

In a fast college gym contest Eliels' independents toppled Midwest Refining 33 to 18 at Normal College. Brick Breeden and Hignight led Eliels with 14 and 8 points, while Erickson and Dahlberg starred for Midwest. Referee Cottey.

Junior High Pupils Will Finish Work

Nineteen eighth grade pupils of the junior high school will receive their diplomas at commencement exercises at the training school auditorium tomorrow at 8 o clock. Rev H N Tragitt Jr will be the speaker. Superintendent Charles Henry will present the candidates and Leonard Eliel will confer the diplomas. The invocation and benediction will be by Rev T J Simons. The training school orchestra will play two selections and the graduates will sing their class song. A reception for parents and friends will follow.

Road funds to receive added money in 1929 Montana

Elena Jan 17. Austin Middleton announces that the administration fund and auto theft fund add 65 991 to distributions for Montana counties bringing 1929 county road shares to 1 501 093. Funds come from license receipts and are allocated in proportion to county receipts from 56 counties.

Schulz and Renfro Sweep Eastern Shoot Prizes

Schulz of the Sheridan Gun Club and Ted Renfro of Dell dominated the Ive-bird shoot at Hartsville Pennsylvania near Philadelphia. They tied for team honors with 49 of 60 while Renfro posted a perfect 50 in the singles. The next day Renfro led the singles with 74 of 75 and won the event.

Hazelbaker Acts as Acting Governor After Return

Lieutenant Governor Frank A. Hazelbaker returned from Washington and eastern points Sunday and immediately assumed duties as acting governor during Governor Erickson’s absence. He signed requisition papers for an embezzlement arrest in Fergus County and plans to remain in Helena until Erickson’s return. He met President Hoover and national leaders, praising Hoover’s interest in Montana.
