Beaverhead County High Principal Joins National Review Panel

D L Johnson Beaverhead County High School principal has been chosen as a member of the reviewing committees for the Commission on Secondary Schools of the North Central Association. He will attend the Chicago meeting March 20 24 1950 and serve on the schools unqualifiedly recommended panel. The Beaverhead board of education authorized his attendance at the regular meeting.

Dillon Rotary hears Dr Davis year in review

The Dillon Rotary Club dinner at Andrus Hotel featured speaker Dr Sheldon E Davis and W M C E Coach Bill Straugh. John Sutherland, Betty Jo Allen and Lloyd Puyear attended. Puyear is visiting from Denver. Davis reviewed events of the year citing agriculture, economics, elections, social outlook and inflation notes. Straugh spoke on his basketball team's progress and potential as conference play begins.

Applications for term annual and temporary grazing permits for the 1950 season must be on file with the district ranger by January 20, 1950. Nonuse requests require 30 days notice. The year begins with the first Dillon birth of 1950 a son born to Mr and Mrs Elijah Peter at Barrett hospital on January 3. The first 1950 marriage license is for Pearl Cot ten and Newel Hincks of Salt Lake City, married January 5 by Justice George E Baker. The year’s first wedding occurred on New Year’s Day uniting Wanda Glassey and William Brown at St Rose Catholic Church.

John H Andersen dies at home in Alder Madison County

John H Andersen, 76, died at his Alder Madison County home last Friday January 6 from pneumonia after prolonged ill health. Born in Oro Denmark in 1873 he worked as a sheep foreman in Beaverhead County before owning a ranch. He married Egidia Jepsen in 1915 and is survived by his widow, a son, three daughters, six grandchildren, two sisters and several brothers and nephews. Funeral services were held January 9 at First Lutheran church in Dillon, with burial at Mountain View cemetery.

Beaverhead Wool Pool Names 1950 Officers

Beaverhead Wool Pool members held their annual meeting at the courthouse. Officers elected for 1950 are Parke T. Scott president Vern McManus vice president Robert Melton treasurer Carl Benson and Arthur Christensen as directors. County Agent Henry Mikkelson reported 1949 business selling 44,000 pounds of wood at 0.62 per pound. Membership for 1949 totaled 48. Mikkelson urges flock owners to join for hay 1950.

Dillon Volunteers Fight Twin Fires Destroying Ranch Home

Two fires taxed the Dillon volunteer department last Monday. A chimney blaze at Ivan Ledbetter’s North Dakota Street home was quickly put out. Later a flue fire at Tony Sporich’s ranch home north of Dillon spread through the second story and destroyed the house, with upstairs flames, no insurance, and belongings lost. High winds Tuesday rekindled embers near Sporich’s site.

Air Reservists Hear McMillan in Dillon Meeting

Major McMillan of the Volunteer Air Reserve Training Squad spoke to a Dillon group at the council chambers about AFR training and the VART program. Retirement pay eligibility starts after 20 years’ service at age 60, with no training pay but possible point credits and promotions. Training units operate in Butte and Helena with local unit options. Dillon appoints a training officer and a recruiting officer and invites interested men to contact Eldon Noble at Winns, Inc. for applications. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday January 16 at 7 30 p m.

Fire destroys ranch house and bunkhouse at Ferguson ranch

The J. C. Ferguson ranch near Glen owned by Lee Joy saw its ranch house and bunkhouse burn to the ground Tuesday morning. The empty property offered no witnesses and investigators believe an overheated flue started the blaze, worsened by yesterday’s high winds.

Young people of St James Episcopal church will present The Feast of Lights a candlelight Epiphany program Sunday Jan 15 at 7 pm. Beaverhead Polio Drive To Begin Next Monday

The 1950 March of Dimes campaign in Beaverhead County will start next Monday. Collection containers shaped like iron lungs will be placed countywide to collect contributions supporting polio victims and research. Local leaders include Don J. Smith as county chairman, Norman Oviitt rural district chair, and Dan E. Henneberry as President's Ball chair.

Argenta Community Supports Knapp Burial Mourners

Argenta residents gathered last Wednesday to comfort mourners at the Knapp burial. Eleven Argenta families contributed funds and labor, serving food and coffee at Lee James' home and helping prepare the graves for the ceremony. The Knapp family lived in Argenta briefly last year during Mr. Knapp’s illness and made many friends.

Dillon City Council Names Murray New Water Commissioner

At a special meeting the Dillon city council accepted the resignations of Elza Patrick as water commissioner and Harold Murray as Ward One councilman with Jan 15 effective dates. Murray was nominated and approved as water commissioner for Jan 16, Philip Lovell named as Ward One councilman to replace Murray. The council discussed federal civic-improvement funds and approved a $10 000 loan application to study and survey Dillon’s water supply.
