Legislature Opens With Rush Bills in Montana

Montana legislators opened with a surge of measures restricting agency spending to annual appropriations and empowering the state board of examiners to cut costs under the appropriations. They also propose investigations of the sugar beet industry, amendments to the old age pension program, rules on tax sale redemptions, a license tax on sheep shearing equipment, and Senate plans to sponsor further bills.

Beaveread County Hit by New Year Blizzard

Dan Mecer was arrested in Dillon last Wednesday on larceny charges and transported to Townsend Saturday. He is also wanted in Billings for forgery. A bitter cold wind followed a heavy snowstorm, leaving county roads drifted and motor traffic largely stopped except on the Butte Monida highway maintained by crews.

Building Progress in Dillon Marks Active 1936 Year

Beaverhead county experienced a busy year for construction in 1936 with multiple projects completed or nearing completion. The standout was the July opening of a federal building costing $80,000, finally providing new public quarters for Dillon residents.

Officers Installed at Mizpah Chapter Eastern Star Meeting

Mizpah chapter of the Eastern Star held a special meeting in the Masonic hall Monday evening with Mrs. Elizabeth Luebben presiding as installing officer. New officers included Mrs. Mary Curry as worthy matron and Dr. R. D. Curry as worthy patron, among others. Past matron Mrs. Fred Woodside received a jewel and a chapter gift, and Mrs. Curry received a gavel from Mr. and Mrs. Dale Tash.

Dr Robert E Albright reviewed world events of the past year at the Dillons Rotary club dinner predicting 1987 directions. He warned the fascist communist struggle could yield a powerful movement if France and Russia do not unite against it. He cited Germany Italy and Japan as a potential axis and Spain as the immediate danger in the antiwar struggle.

Charles Godfrey Former Lima Man Dies at Hospital

Charles W. Godfrey a former Lima young man died last Saturday at Barrett hospital after a brief illness. He was visiting Beaverhead relatives from Idaho where he recently resided. Born in Ramafield Ohio 24 years ago he lived in Beaverhead county most of his life. Surviving are his widow an infant son his parents Mr and Mrs Edward Godfrey two sisters and two brothers in Focatello another brother in Fort Douglas and his parents in law Mr and Mrs William Rogers of Dell. The funeral was held Monday from Brundage chapel with Rev J A Meeke of Grace Methodist Episcopal Church officiating and interment in Mountain View cemetery.

Beaverhead County Officers Begin New Terms Majority Retains Posts

Beaverhead County officers began new terms Monday at the courthouse. Sheriff Paul H Temple and undersheriff John Troupe along with chief deputy E W Renfro took over duties as records and cases were turned over. Judge Henry G Rodgers started as Fifth district judge. Sen George H Montgomery and Rep Joe Metten took oaths as Beaverhead's representatives in Helena.

Matt Stimac Dies of Heart Attack at Beaverhead Ranch

Matt Stimac a longtime Beaverhead county ranch hand died at the P. and O. Livestock Co. home ranch last Thursday noon, apparently from a heart attack. A native of Austria he came to Beaverhead county 28 years ago and had worked at the P. and O. ranch since 1918. The body was taken to East Helena for services and burial.

Beaverhead county tops Montana for livestock value in the 1934–36 biennial report with total valuation reaching 2,579,547 dollars, higher than second place Big Horn and Fergus in third. Agreement on Red Rock Lake Hunting Reached

The agreement for migratory waterfowl hunting at Red Rock Lake was delivered to Bernard King, with J. C. Sayler of the Biological Survey proposing it for review by Dr. Ira Gabrileson. Sportsmen expect final contract to be signed in Helena this month after discussions in Butte with Montana officials and local clubs.

Edgar B. Rife of Armstead was elected chairman of the Beaverhead County Board of Commissioners at the January reorganizational session. He will lead the board for two years, succeeding W. B. Hartwig, and is a Beaverhead County native, son of Isaac and pioneer resident Mrs. Rife.

Highways In Poor Shape For Travel After Icy Spreads

Garage wreckers handled numerous calls as vehicles slid on icy stretches near Dillon and Ryan canyon. Mrs. Thomas L. Scott of Grant suffered head injuries and cuts when her car overturned twice near the Mooney ranch. Homer Bradford, a Butte High School instructor, was injured when his car left the road near Melrose. Several other cars skidded with less serious damage and some were pulled from snow drifts within Dillon city limits.

Beaverhead Welcomes 1937 With Lively New Year Festivities

Beaverhead County rang in the new year with widespread celebrations. In Dillon a large crowd attended the firemen’s annual dance at City Hall, and watch parties filled the town as 1937 began with exuberant cheers.

Howard E. Morse of Dillon was elected to the Montana Woolgrowers Association board of trustees for a three year term at the state convention in Billings. Harry A. Snyder of Billings was re elected association president. The convention closed today after a fat lamb and wool auction.
