Mining Outlook Brightens For Beaverhead County Districts
Beaverhead county and western Montana face a tough 1908 with copper slumps and tight money but expect a busier year ahead. In Arenta the Buitte-Arengta company pushes a northward vein from the 700 foot tunnel while Gladstone Gold Mining reports high grade ore at Midnight and active sinking. Other properties like Goldfinch Dolphin and Ferdinand build progress, with Dillon-Argenta and Blue Wing/ New Departure shifting during the year. Elkhorn district sees renewed interest as tunnels advance and Dacotah plans a Chilean mill for spring operation.

Governor Urges Reforms and Tax Measures for State
The message favors jailing concealed weapon offenders and reforming grand jury selection. It warns of a $300,000,000 valuation and tax-levy funding issues, proposes a special livestock tax, prison relief through convict labor, and a state funded bank guarantee as a safeguard for depositors. It calls for public utility regulation, broader railroad powers, mining ventilation laws, and unified education with state control. It also supports public ownership, mining lease rules, timber conservation, and a graduated income tax with cash-value assessments.
