Four new faces joined Beaverhead county courthouse staff as terms began yesterday. Archie Henneberry became commissioner, Leonard Schulz county attorney, Miss Margaret Sweeney superintendent of schools, and Irving Orr county surveyor. Other new term appointees include Norman Giles clerk of the court, Albert Baker clerk and recorder, Paul Temple sheriff, Bertie Mathews treasurer, O. M. Best assessor, F. C. McFadden public administrator, James E. Phillips coroner, and Louis Stahl George Opp as justices of the peace.

1939 Building Boom Planned in Dillon and Beaverhead
Dillon and Beaverhead county plan the largest construction drive in years for 1939. A $300,000 Beaverhead County High School will replace existing buildings with phase one under way. WPA funds cover about $35,000 for rural school improvements and grounds, creating work for around 80 men. A $10,000 Lima street project is also funded by WPA. A Dillon real estate firm will build an office on South Montana Street opposite the O S L depot. Big Hole basin residents anticipate action on a proposed improved highway into the basin as part of broader highway work.

Beaverhead motorists rush for 1939 license plates
Beaverhead car owners flocked to the courthouse to obtain 1939 plates. About 300 licenses were issued yesterday with many more expected this week. The process requires visits to the assessor for vehicle value, then tax calculation by the treasurer, payment, and presenting last year's registration slip. The new plates feature a black background with orange numerals.

New Year Is Welcomed In With Gusto In Dillon
Dillon residents rang in 1938 with numerous watch parties and dances. The Dillon Volunteer fire department hosted its New Year Eve ball at city hall with free favors, while the Dillon Country club held a dance for members and guests led by hosts Dr. and Mrs. W. H. Stephan and others. A Farmers Union party occurred in Glen and many locals traveled to visit relatives during the holiday.

Three Men Sentenced to Prison for Forgery
Three men pled guilty before Judge Henry G. Rodgers and received prison terms for forgery. Clarence Myers got four years for cashing bad checks at two local businesses, with prior offenses noted. Nick Thomas drew two years and Perry Bromley one year. Glen Ellsworth and Dick LaCroix faced arraignment on the same charge as Thomas and Bromley. Officers also destroyed gambling equipment from a summer raid and turned $80.80 from the Eagle on Bannock Street to the county treasurer for the poor fund.

Sam Freeman Secures Long-Pending Homestead Patent
Bea verhead rancher Sam Freeman filed for a homestead patent 40 years ago. He applied May 15, 1898 and final patent issued May 21, 1938 after sworn affidavits confirming he was the original applicant. He resided on the homestead continuously during the intervening years.

High School Students Move to Montana Normal College
Beaverhead county high school students will study at Montana State Normal College for the remainder of the term while their new high school is built. Ten basement rooms are set aside for classes with no study periods. Equipment was moved to the new quarters or stored in county buildings during Christmas vacation. The Normal College winter term opened with similar enrollment to last year and Dillon public schools also start.

Hearing Planned on Fort Harrison Vet Hospital Expansion
Sen. B. K. Wheeler informed the Montana American Legion that a January hearing in Washington, D C will consider enlarging the Fort Harrison veterans hospital. Proposed addition of about 165 rooms would cost between 150000 and 200000 dollars. Legion may send a representative, but Wheeler and Sen. James E. Murray are expected to attend. The Fort Harrison site has needed space since 1935 earthquake damage.

Hartwig Dies. Helena Native Was Cigar Store Owner
Wilbur A. Hartwig 37 long prominent Helena native and businessman died in his home at 2 South Benton after several mild heart attacks. Funeral at 2 p m Monday in the Opp and Conrad chapel with Burial in Resurrection cemetery. He studied at local schools and Gonzaga University, later worked as a motion picture operator before joining James Higgins in the Higgins Cigar Store and was a member of Helena aerie No 16 Fraternal Order of Eagles. He married Margaret Morris of Whitefish after buying into the Higgins store.

Dillon City in Strong Financial Shape Says Montana Appraisal
The Montana Taxpayers association reports Dillon in excellent financial condition for December. Net indebtedness fell by 3,668 dollars, per capita indebtedness at 8.59 dollars. Water bonds total 35,000 dollars with 14,198 dollars cash in other funds. Beaverhead county receives state funds totaling 22,630.45, with school and other fund allocations listed. The Montana State Normal College seeks an 85,000 dollar budget for next year, while 66,000 dollars was appropriated for 1938 and 1939.

J D Brundage, a former Centen nial valley merchant and rancher, was appointed supervisor of Beaverhead county farm by the board of commissioners yesterday. He will begin duties immediately, succeeding the late George Stimpson. The board also reorganized with Martin C Jackson as chairman and Archie Henneberry starting a six year term as commissioner. Rife was named national re employment officer for Beaverhead county.

Dillon Man Claimed by Illness Passes Away
Joseph LeClair 70, longtime Dillon resident, died at home Sunday after a brief illness. Born Feb 16, 1868 in New York, he moved to Dillon in 1903. Survived by widow and stepson Hank Toomey of Butte. Funeral held this afternoon at Brundage chapel with Rev F X Lechner officiating. Burial in Mountain View Cemetery.

Beaverhead Conservation Committee organizes for the year
The Beaverhead County Agricultural Conservation Committee held its annual organization meeting at the County Agent Bernard Williams office. Williams was re elected secretary and Dora Smith treasurer, with J C Ferguson re elected county chairman. The group discussed 1939 soil depletion allotments to be approved by the state board and notices to ranchers by Feb 1 with 15 days for reconsideration.

State approves grant for tuberculosis sanatorium expansion
The state board of examiners last week formally approved a 41,727 grant from the Public Works Administration to fund a 58-room addition to the Galen tuberculosis sanatorium. The remaining 50,273 of the expansion cost will be covered by revenue bonds.
